Cute Birdies In Ladrang (Cute Attack)
The Tsem Ladrang Aviary is a sanctuary for birds where a clean environment, music, fresh water and food is provided to the resident birds everyday. The aviary is spacious, specially built that way to allow the birds to stretch their wings and fly around. Many toys are hung everywhere in the aviary for the birds to play and entertain themselves. To date we have 34 cute and
adorable birdies in our aviary comprising:-
2 Cocktoos – Drolkar (female) and Dechog (male)
1 African Grey – Aki (male)
1 Pigeon – Betty (female)
1 Canary
3 Malaysian Parrots
18 Cockatiels
8 Sun Connures
I have always loved birds and it breaks my heart when I see them poorly cared for, especially in pet shops. Hence, many of the birds in the aviary are from my “rescue” missions from pet shops. He he… I had some photos of the birds taken and would like to share with you these very cute and pretty pictures of them. Hope you like them.

When we first shifted into this Ladrang, we had only four cockatiels and brought with us 4 eggs from 2 of the 4 of the cockatiels. The 4 eggs have since hatched and the birds are now adult cockatiels that look just like their parents. The population of cockatiels in the aviary now has grown to 18 birds. Thanks to my “rescue” missions… Hehe.
The Malaysian Parrots
The Sun Conures

Recently, we did a reorganization of the birds in our aviary. There are two sections to our aviary. We have placed all the peaceful birds – Cockatoos, African Grey, Malaysian Parrots, Pigeon, Canary and Cockatiels in one section while the more aggressive Sun Conures are in another section.
We have 8 Sun Conures. 2 of them which have been recently brought to Ladrang are still babies and are quite gentle. 6 of our older sun conures are loud, boisterous, cheeky, territorial and can bite. As such, we have temporarily put the 6 older ones into a cage within the aviary to let them and the newcomers get accustomed to each other. The two younger conures are left to roam free in the aviary.
Later, we will be releasing the sun conures in the cage into the aviary one by one with a gap of one week in between each release to ensure that the older sun conures are peacefully assimilated with the two younger birds. This is so that the sun conures in the cage think that the cage and not the aviary is their territory and will not be so aggressive when they are released into it.

One of the sun conures in the cage was just a baby when he was brought back to Ladrang

Congratulations Rinpoche! In an instant, now you have established a microcosm for building a full-scale animal sanctuary cum aviary! Like they say ‘Success comes in cans’ not cannots.
Would be good if the parrots could be train to chant in support of pujas and help bring merits to the birds themselves at the same time

The 34 cute, healthy, beautiful and adorable birdies in our Tsem Ladrang Aviary Sanctuary for the lucky “rescued” birds, each lives a free and much-cared for, clean and healthy life. Each specie of birds is specially being selected and placed seperately in their respective aviary to avoid agreesion and conflicts, until they are peacefully assimilated with each other. Then they are allowed to come together peacefully with each other, and allowed to be mixed together in the same aviary. Such way of life is really conflict, stress, and aggression free, where the birds will live a much more longer and healthier life. Like our Guru said, “What makes us good humans, is not how we abuse animals, but how much we allow them to live and be happy freely”. OM MANI PADME HUM.
I’ve visited the aviary at Tsem Ladrang a couple of times. It is very beautiful and really well maintained by the volunteers. I hope everyone will have the chance to see it too.
Thank you for sharing this Rinpoche.
Rinpoche has great concern for animals. When Rinpoche sees many birds crammed in a cage in the pet shops, Rinpoche always buys many of these birds to either release or keep in the aviary. The birds in the aviary are very well taken care of with fresh water and food given every day.
