Tantras, Vases, Finances, Meat & Thoughts…..

In the tantras such as Tara, White Tara, Vajrapani, Manjushri, Saraswati, Tsongkapa, Dukkar, Avalokitesvara, Oserchenma, Maitreya, etc, it is highly recommended you do not eat meat/eggs when you engage in their sadhanas, practice, retreats. When you do Tara Pujas (Drolchok), you are suppose to avoid meat or you shouldn’t engage in the pujas. In the Monastery, countless times we have to do Tara puja or engage monks to do for us, they have to avoid meat before coming..it was strict. If you are doing Naga pujas, you have to avoid meat and it is a must. There are many types of beneficial naga pujas such as Lutor, Lusang, etc that you avoid meat totally. There’s a very powerful Naga vase (Lubum), which my guru made and I have one for years now, and it is specifically for generating wealth for dharma activities. If you keep this vase, make proper offerings, then with the motivation of dharma, your financial resources will increase to fund the dharma works. 10 years ago, when I was literally down to a few dollars and struggled financially very badly, I called my Guru for divination, he said to get a Naga vase and then with some time it will be ok. He taught me how to make offerings and what to offer and not offer and one big no-no is meat. He said avoid meat…or in my thinking no wealth…LOL. Well I didn’t offer meat, after that yearly I can see growth in Kechara. So no meat in this case was worth it for growth to benefit others.

It seems eating vegetables and eating animals are both bad, in that case cut one out completely. Why do both. Our karmic ripening makes us take rebirth always in situations that we cannot avoid all situational karma as a natural by product. But we have a choice to make it less. No matter what we do or how we exist at our ordinary levels, we will accummulate negative karma. So we have to choose conscioiusly to lessen them. His Holiness Dalai Lama, many Tulkus/Geshes/monks in Gaden tells us go vegetarian. The beautiful Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the sacred Nun Rev Chen Yen of Taiwan (http://tw.tzuchi.org/en/index.php? ) with hundreds of centres around the world and the whole accomplished Mahayana Buddhism of China forbids meat. The current Karmapa banned all meats in the Monasteries. Before it was meat and vegetables/rice. Now no more meat. The trend is no meat.

Make it simple, if you have to eat vegetables/grains/fruits, grow it yourself. And that follows the same for meat, if u savour flesh so much, then raise and kill the animal yourself. Don’t indirectly let other ppl collect the karma for you so you can eat or don’t eat at all…join the formless realms or go to the god realms…That’s difficult to do also huh?

I may have people object, but that is ok, as a Buddhist teacher for the rest of my life I will advocate a no meat diet, produce books, blog posts, works and inspirational examples toward Vegetarianism. If that lifestyle offends/angers others or they feel their spirituality is being put down because of that, I do apologize. But that is not my intent, but it is their perceptions speaking or their perceptions of my motivation for speaking about no meat..If it really upsets them, then they don’t have to visit my posts, my writings and my ideas…LOL…simple as that… In this day and age, when you say things ppl like, then they praise you as a great person, great Rinpoche, great teacher, if you say something slightly off, no matter how they ‘liked’ you in the past, it changes. It’s reflective of the times and dynamics of this day and age. As my guru says, if you practice/teach dharma these days, you become a white crow. LOL..

    Dear Tsem Rinpoche
100% agree with you,the most difficult tasks or goal is to help another ppl, they dont appreciate those who help them sometimes even back stab them but then we should forgive them eventhough we waste alot time & resources to help them

Rinp i understand that since Holiness Dalai Lama had issued a ban eating of meat in Gelugpa monasteries in 2005, so has the Gyalwa Karmapa. Why are the monks allowed to buy and eat mean outside of the monastery?

    • tsemtulku on Mar 16, 2011 at 7:21 pm

Dear Grace, your going to have to ask some of them who do that? I am not the monk-police…hehe. TR

Its better to not sit on the fence if you have to choose one. To eat vegetarian or to eat meat. Either one has its pros and cons. So better to choose eating vegetarian. It would be easier to eat vegetarian in our modern day living environment as compared to the old days. Omitting meat in you diet serves two purposes. One for health and one for Spiritual practice. In the old days you have to cook your food at home even if you are busy. But in these days you still can be busy but you can buy delicious food in many places. If you have the thought of meat you still can have mock meat which taste exactly like real meat.

Why bother asking who eats meat and who doesn’t?

Why bother pretending to be a Compassionate Dharma Police when one is still craving to eat meat at the very chance they get?

Why ask so many questions because it only looks like one is trying to justify that eating meat is ok so that one can continue to do so without guilt?

Well, if we want to ignore the blood splattered all over the walls and grounds – turn a deaf ear to the screams and cries of the animals being butchered – pretend meat is all packaged neatly and nicely in supermarkets and no animal suffered or died to serve that food chain to you – well, if we can do all that and still feel totally great about ourselves – then, there is no need for any justification.

May as well just scribble the word: “KILLER” on our foreheads and continue as we are.

Yes, what I have written here is very harsh for the eyes to read but it has been so painful and harsh to see how all the animals have been suffering and will continue to suffer. It is this reality that bites the hardest of all.

In everything we do, there is positive and negative effects due to the nature of our existence. It is 100% correct you don’t eat meat. HH the Dalai Lama, the highest authority within Tibetan Buddhism recommends we do not eat meat, so that is all we need to remember. Buddha said, we should not lie, or get attached to drinking, singing, dancing, intimacies, entertainments and that we should spend our energies to become enlightened. Are we doing all die and not just the meat part?? People tend to pick what is convenient from the Buddha’s teachings to suit themselves. If we are going to follow Buddha’s teachings or quote, we may ask are you following everything Buddha says? If you are not, then rejoice when others follow the best they can and as much as they can. Since it is the right path for 21st century Buddhists to follow the no meat path, let’s do it. We have so much variety of food. Let’s eat the no meat diet and get on with our practice and basically compassionately go passed the criticisms. It is very simple, do not kill. So hence animals will not die in front of you to eat them…There is no good karma in eating meat..full stop, but definitely there is good karma refraining from eat. Many of the tantras when engaged in the practice prohibit meat as taught by Vajradhara. Many rituals we do in the great Monasteries prohibit meat so the rituals are more effective…..Many who are not monks or not living in the monasteries would never understand that. Reading from books, net or from dharma centres would never be the same as in the monastery. Again, eating meat does not gather good merits for our spiritual practice, avoiding does. Listen to some of wonderful Tenzin Palmo’s views on not eating meat. She is the great yogini who meditated for the longest time in the mountains.TR

As our guru said,”Our Karmic ripening makes us take rebirth always in situations that we cannot avoid all situational karma as a natural by product. BUT WE HAVE A CHOICE TO MAKE IT LESS.” It is also for this reason why all of us are here at KECHARA HOUSE, similar to what Rinpoche did 10 years ago when he was in a very desperately bad situation, to seek a Divination from his Guru for a remedy. He obediently and devotionally did exactly what his Guru taught him to do to make Kechara to grow and expand to what it is today to benefit so many. What Rinpoche tells us to do, is also what H.H.The Dalai Lama, many Tulkus/Geshes/Monks in Gaden, including the universally reputed Master Thich Nhat Hanh, The sacred nun Rev.Chen Yen of Taiwan, including hundreds of centres around the world, including the Mahayana Buddhism of China, are all doing, i.e. ALL OF WHOM FORBID MEAT. To us all you are indeed, a truly a great compssionate Teacher, Rinpoche, there is no doubt about it. Whatever you do, you did for the benefit of all of us, not only at KECHARA, but all in equanimity. Thank you Rinpoche from the bottom of our hearts.

You mentioned about naga vase, I want to know how to make an offering to the naga vase, do u have to make an offering everyday? Do you have to light an incense or candle? And if you had a salt water fish tank in the house does the naga get mad? And how will you know what kind of naga is in your naga vase?

From Sengpiow: Yesterday, Tsem Rinpoche went for a morning walk in a park near his residence, and saw a dying fish in the stream. Rinpoche went near the fish to recite mantra and blow the mantra on the fish, so that the fish can take a good rebirth by the blessing of the mantras…Then Rinpoche saves some trapped birds and bat! watch the video here! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvh-r3cW2zw

Today’s advice is meant to help you and arm you against negative energies. I have come across many types of spirit or black magic afflictions. Some were genuine, some were paranoia or people wanting to blame their failures on something else. If powerful positive beings exist, then why not negative. If good beings help you then negative would harm. The world is filled with both types in humans and non-humans. Depending on our karma we can attract both. Better to be safe. Do our prayers to Tsongkapa/Setrap daily. It can only help never harm. It can prevent in some cases. I wish everyone safety, luck, merits and spiritual growth. TR

Negative energies or beings that follow you back from ‘dirty’ places or places of vice where the owners may keep spirits for success can be attracted to you and follow you home. It may not affect you as your merits are ok..but it can affect a family member or friend. They could create disharmony, fighting for no reasons. accidents, fear, lack of sleep, loss of appetite, change in moods, mood swings, anger, electrical problems, loss of memory (severe cases). I have encountered many of these sorts in the last 20 years of meeting people. Some ppl had pots and pans banged at night in their homes, or when they are in bed, something is always touching them. Some of these cases solved when they followed suggestions to overcome. Some do not follow and the situations gets worse. So if should protect and bless ourselves with GURU YOGA OF TSONGKAPA/MIGTSEYMA/SETRAP PRACTICE DAILY. We have nothing to lose and it increases wisdom, patience and merits. TR
************ Even when you don’t need to go far, sometimes we go to certain hawker places, wet markets, places that slaughter alot of animals (very dirty and negative energy), places with gambling, or very down places like clubs (drinking/heartbreaks/sadness), or places that have alot of fighting or pain, death, hospitals, funerals,etc.. we should bless ourselves before going and after going…sometimes we are sensitive and when we go we can attract wrong energies or negative spirits. They can follow us and hide in our homes for years or months before they ‘appear’. It can affect our family too. So very good to do GURU YOGA OF TSONGKAPA DAILY, FOLLOWED BY MIGTSEYMA AND THEN CONCLUDE WITH SETRAP PRAYERS/MANTRA AND BLACK TEA. You shouldn’t think prayers of these sorts daily is a chore or lots of work…you should think it is protection. If you are affected it might take months or years to ‘clean’ you again..so it is worth it to do your protection daily and have your pendants to bless you. TR

When we travel alot, we pass through many places, many buildings, many vehicles, sit in many seats, stay at many places. Hundred or thousands of beings used these items and places.. All these may have negative energy or residual energy of the previous person that can affect you if you are sensitive. Sometimes if you are very sensitive, in some cases, these energies can make you blur in which case you are considered polluted. It is very important then to take holy water daily. Wash with holy water (can get from Pastors or Ladrang) and recite Manjushri’s praise daily 3x and mantra 5 or more rounds till you feel cleared. You may do wrathful black Manjushri or peaceful Manjushri. Up to you. Before you travel it is good to bless your clothes, bags, luggage and personal items with GURU YOGA OF TSONGKAPA/MIGTSEYMA/ SERKYM OF SETRAP. After reciting the migtseyma/setrap mantra, blow on your clothes and items and feel you are protected. This would safeguard you before you travel. TR
***************** Also excellent and modern are Buddha pendants. After you pick a Buddha pendant, have one of the Pastors of Kechara bless the pendant. Then keep the pendant well and wear is excellent. If you do not have access to a Pastor, then keep your pendant on your shrine and do GURU YOGA OF TSONGKAPA/MIGTSEYMA/SETRAP SERKYM to consecrate your pendants. After consecration one wears the pendant that looks like a beautiful piece of jewellery but actually they are powerful protection pendants because they contain the consecrated image of a powerful manifestation of enlightenment-a Buddha. One can have a few pendants is ok. But one should get the best pendant one can from made from the best material and think the good material is offered to Buddha. If the pendants get stained due to sweat, then very good to clean thinking you are purifying your karma. One should make sure all your loved ones wear a blessed pendant. If Buddhas are beneficial on your shrine, very good on your body also. TR
*********************** Chakras are good to keep. Chakras are special mantras, mandalas and prayers of a certain Buddha. Then it is folded then sealed with 5 colored strings during pujas. Puja and consecration of the chakras can take 1-3 days where the diety is invited and abide within each chakra. Chakras should not get wet, otherwise they can be kept anywhere or worn anywhere. Wearing chakras is very good, but to fully activate their energy, one should recite the mantra, prayer and liturgy of one’s diety. If you don’t have a specific deity, you do GURU YOGA OF TSONGKAPA/MIGTSEYMA/SETRAP and this will ‘activate’ the power of the chakra fully. It is also very good to do this. Chakras are wonderful gifts. They an be worn, kept in car, office, wallet or anyhwere..They are very holy and very effective. TR
    ************
Most important when you travel alot or stay in many hotels, keep a dukkar or hayagriva chakra with you. It is good to bless the room with recitation of GURU YOGA OF TSONGKAPA. Recite migtseyma 21x and do do black tea to your protector. Then go to sleep. It is a good way to purify the room with the above. If you do it wilth faith with tremendous confidence you will be protected from negative energies. This is a easy practice to protect yourself when you have to travel alot and stay in many different types of hotels. Many people stay in hotels with many types of energies. Sometimes the residual energy will stay and affect another person. Very good to do this. TR
************* When people sleep they should not have offering bowls, empty altar cups, empty plates, cups and bowls around one’s bed. Also when you sleep, try not to place your hands on your chest. These actions attract one type of spirit. Once they come, they hang around for quite a while. Make sure your altar does not have empty items on it. Make sure there are not empty items around you when going to sleep or around your bed. TR

I haven’t lived in Gaden since 1992 when I was sent to Malaysia. I love Gaden and loved so much living there. I like so many things about Gaden. Conversations would not be lonely and easy. Whatever I talk about the monks immediately understand. I do not have to face ‘opposition’ , doubts, hundreds of questions, and every detail simple about the dharma or dharma work has to be explained. I miss that so much. I am not lonely for company, but I am lonely for familiarity very much. I was very content, at peace and in my element in Gaden. I never knew or imagined I would have to go to Malaysia, stay and take on heavy responsibilities. I am not complaining but I love Gaden, the monks, my teachers, the great masters, the senior monks whom I have many friends. I miss them so much. So so much. I love and respect the great old monks, Rinpoches and spectacular Geshes. Gaden was a city of practitioners and I was home. Lord Tsongkapa’s presence pervades the whole Gaden. TR

Dear all, had a nice conversation with my friend the monk Ven. Losang Yeshe in Gaden a few days ago. I had asked him to learn up how to make a large outdoor stupa from senior monks a few months ago. He told me he is learning and it is not difficult for him at all. I am looking forward to building our Vajra Yogini stupa in the future and he will assist us. It will be my/our first outdoor stupa in this life. Very beneficial and purifying for us. TR

She really took the time and effort to write it…I was happy to see she wrote exaclty as I expressed. Effort pays off usually or eventually. I am happy to see there are 669 views (43 comments) already going back to Paris’ blog to read the teachings. The teachings will be benfit many. Must save and read again and again. Heruka! We say we want to improve yet we don't hold our vows. We promise to keep our samaya, yet our promise to our earlier promises laxed. We want to experience only good results yet we hold onto our face. We want wealth, yet we give nothing. We want success, yet we offer tiny offerings to the Three Jewels. We say we have great faith in our Guru, yet when his assignments are difficult we run. We say we want a good rebirth yet all our actions are motivated by self gain. Heruka, Heruka, Heruka, how are we to recieve your blessings when our three doors are closed tightly by selfishness, ignorance and anger?~Tsem Rinpoche

Bryan gave me an incredible MOTHER'S DAY GIFT. It is so auspicious. He had someone draw HH Kyabje Zong Rinpoche's sacred face onto the body of Buddha Vajradharma. Buddha Vajradharma is the form Buddha takes to teach the immaculate and fautless tantra of Vajra Yogini. In Vajra Yogini's tantra and meditations, you must visualize your guru in the form of Vajradharma to make offerings both inner, outer & secret offerings daily to one's tantric guru & to meditate on Him in that form. It is very integral part of the practice. If you do the meditations well on your guru in this particular form during the practice of the sadhana..you can gain tremendous realizations and control over one's mind to leave the body when you want. So getting this picture today was an omen if Kecharians fulfill their responsibilities, then Vajra Yogini's practice will spread in this region. Very good omen. I feel this strongly. Bryan really planned out this gift & surprised me!! I will put in Chamang Ladrang in the future. THANK YOU BRYAN!!TR

Back in New Jersey over 30 years ago, there lived a lady down the street who was also a student of my teacher. Her name is Carmen (she is a nun now and her ordination name is: Ani Thupten). She had a nice size library of books and many dharma books. I loved the Dharma books!! I would spend so much time browsing and getting snippets of each book from Carmen. I use to ride by bike down to chat with her and borrow her books and it took me like 5 mins by bike..She lived on the same street. I would read dharma books voraciously and write down my questions. I would call Carmen almost daily for years to ask her to clarify the readings I had questions on. She would spend hours on a phone with me answering questions never once losing patience. I learned so much from her. She had vast dharma knowledge, very devoted to our teacher and would do her meditations and extensive sadhanas daily. She would join in all the dharma classes and pujas at our nearby Kalmuck Buddhist Temple. She was such a good dharma friend and I enjoyed her company very much. I wanted to be like her to have the freedom to study and practice dharma. When I recievd my first initiation by our teacher at the temple, Carmen sat right next to me on the front row. Thrilling!! After initiation we would have ten days of explanations (commentary) from our teacher His Eminence Kensur Losang Tharchin Rinpoche. I was so excited and deeply happy to get commentary from our great and knowledgable teacher. What I did not understand, I would of course consult Carmen who is much more advanced and taught me patiently after each day’s teachings. Around 15 years ago Carmen came to India and I travelled with her to holy Bodhgaya, Varanasi and Dharamsala. I escorted her to these places. Since then I have not met up with her. But I know she is fine. Around two years back I sent her a three foot Vajra Yogini statue as a gift from me. Carmen received the statue and was very happy. It was my offering to her for so much kindness shown me when I was a child. I wish so much she can visit Malaysia. She would be happy. We all want to be a part of something big and with good results. But the only way we can be a part of that is if we work hard together with the other members of our Kechara. The time will pass. It can pass with you taking on difficulties or it can pass with you doing nothing. I feel it's better to work hard now and enjoy later than to enjoy nothing now and then end up nowhere later. Prayers and dedications are ok, but hard work must be part of the prayer. Tsem Rinpoche

His Holiness the Dalai Lama seated here with His sacred mother. A mother who gives birth to great beings like Shakyamuni, Tsongkapa, Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, Trijang Rinpoche, etc must be a Buddha Herself, a highly realized Dakini, a powerful practitioner, or a lady who made prayers in previous lives to provide others with great dharma in one way or another. A lady of great spiritual merit or virtue.. I wanted to share this photo with you because if I ever met His Holiness' mother, I would prostrate to Her immediately. Beautiful picture. His Holiness is not ordinary for sure and neither could a being who gave birth to Him. Tibetans always said she was very saintly, gentle, simple and deeply spiritual. During Her lifetime many went to recieve Her blessings..Tsem Rinpoche

It's very revealing how when you give, offer and have something for them, they crowd around smiling, happy and easy. The minute you ask them to give something, contribute or really help out, they totally disappear. Handphones shut. No replies. No sound. As if you they never knew you. People like that make themselves 2nd rate, find 1st rate people to work with and move on. Recently I encountered some students like that!~ Tsem Rinpoche

When I was in Thubten Dhargye Ling centre with the great Master Geshe Tsultrim Gyeltsen in Los Angeles, on the main altar was this poster size printed framed picture of His Holiness meditating. I noticed a gentle glow around His Holiness the Dalai Lama's head and body. It has been my favorite picture of His Holiness ever since then which was in the 80's. I found it again today and I share with all of you. May the ordinary and ultimate purposes of His Holiness' incarnation on this earth bless us, nurture us and purify us. Tsem Rinpoche

She works in Kechara Soup Kitchen and Ladrang (Haven). She comes in everyday and takes charge of my kitchen where I stay together with Levi. She makes sure we have the groceries, helps to plan and cook, clean and restock our pantry here...she makes me all types of healthy and delicious herbal teas I drink throughout the day everyday...This morning she was so thoughtful. She bought me Vegetarian Indian food...yummy. I love Indian breakfast..I like Indian food alot. It is very nice. She comes in daily to join Levi to prepare food for me and our team here where I stay. But the people are every enthusiastic. 4. Pastor Chia was here to brief and lead the prayer. We introduce to the people our Kechara Pastor. Sound new to them but they can see that the Pastor is someone in a highly position to deliver spiritual talk or ritual. 5. There are some new faces that join us today. Last night between 300-400 persons congregated at Kechara while I gave a talk to them on 'making a choice' and 'the power and purpose of stupas'. The talk has been taped and will be blogged once tape is ready. The talk was two hours and it flowed well for me although I had very little sleep. Towards the end of the talk I gave refuge vows to 100 new persons from different countries for this. When everything was done, I met up with a group of 15 and 5 from Shanghai. Had a nice dharma talk with them on how to make a centre grow and harmony. Passed out nice dharma gifts to all the visitors so they don't go home empty handed. Also seperately met some directors and movie producers that attended the talk and sought private time with me..these producers and directors are very well known locally. One is from Hong Hong. Got home around 5Am and saw so many gifts from people. Did a Manjushri dedication for all the people who offered gifts to me on Wesak day in gratitude. Also some people from Europe called in to Kechara to arrange flowers to be given to me last night. That was very sweet. I have so many flowers now..over 70 bouquets I would...guess. They have all been offered up on the shrine. Thank you. TR (May 5, 2012)

Karma exists and created constantly by our actions. Karma created in the past is fertile and will open up when the situation arises. We should never relax and think everything will be alright when there is so much volatile latent karma like a huge volcano temporarily dormant. We can do something about it though. We can 'manipulate' karma and here's how: http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/kechara-13-depts/what-are-pujas-about-do-take-a-good-read.html

If we always do not understand Dharma, then that is a sign of not studying. If we always blame Dharma, it is a sign we do not know what dharma really is. If we always expect of the Dharma, then we are using Dharma in ineffective methods. If we find Dharma difficult, then it is because we are unwilling to accept it. If we give up the Dharma, we are get deeper into our sufferings without respite. If we complain about Dharma it is a sign we are looking for blame in the wrong places and not within ourselves.~Tsem Rinpoche

After visiting KFR, some of us went to visit KWPC land too. Now KWPC seems very real to us already. Everyone seems to have enjoyed this trip a lot.

If we still pursue relationships why hasn't it worked in the past for us? If we are still looking for it and still haven't found it yet, then we must examine what is it in us that doesn't obtain it. If we are in a relationship and we feel stuck, trapped or disenchanted, isn't that a message from our wisdom deep in us we need to achieve something higher? Go for more than finding comfort in the lonliness of false company already.. Contemplate. Tsem Rinpoche
