Study Room in a Forest
Scholar’s Library was designed by architect Peter Gluck and is located in the Catskill Mountains, northwest of New York, USA. This unusual building accommodates over 10,000 books belonging to the architect and his wife, a scholar of Japanese history.
You can look at the incredible looking studying refuge as a 20 feet cube filled with knowledge. While the ground floor has no windows as it was especially developed for storing books, the upper level is open towards the inspiring natural environment. The large windows offer panoramic views of the surrounding forest and contribute to creating a charming retreat, perfect for studying and relaxation. There is plenty of space within the beautiful studio, enough to shelter a comfy sofa, work spaces and bookshelves. Could you imagine a better office? ( Photos by Paul Warchol )

What a beautiful library in such serene environment in the forest or woods. We can rest assure we can concentrate more in places like this, especially for the Kechara Forest Retreat land. Wow!
How good with everything can be back to basic and natural. Peace and harmony can easily find in the forest without the disturb from the outside world.

It remind me tree house, is always appear in Hollywood movie, i always dream to have a tree house when i was kid.
Wow, this study room is awesome… And as according to Professors we should look into green after 15mins of reading or watching monitor. So this room is so wonderful and we can just simple look out the forest with green field after reading.
I wish that we have this study room at Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR).

We can built a similar Study Room within Kechara Forest Retreat for Rinpoche. Then it will be better then this one in the US as it will have the blessings of Rinpoche and the Dharma.
Yes, we should build one for KFR, and may be we can open it to public at certain time? I can visualize myself reading Dharma text and contemplate in this library…
Great architecture! The idea is fantastic! I have never seen a personal library so beautiful. You feel like you’re literally in the forest. The peace and serenity just sitting in the room is therapeutic. It’d be great if the other side of the window has a spectacular view of the mountains!

It’s a great and wonderful idea to have a similar library in KFR for Rinpoche and maybe at certain times, this library can be opened to the public.
In such conducive environment , one need not be anywhere else !

Interesting! I would rather have it as a house than a study place. I wouldn’t mind living in the middle of the forest and waking up to the calm and peaceful surroundings. I can do some reading and chanting along with the sounds of the birds… And I know I will have the chance very near in the future. Can’t wait!
I love this concept on study room in a Forest. The design is very simple and gives a whole lot of peace in mind. The study room can be utilized to meditate and if the space is big enough yoga can be carried out. This brings everyone very near to the nature. Everyone can enjoy a getaway trip if this concept can be materialized in KFR and KWPC. Superbly good for spiritual growth. I super love this!

Study Room in a Forest, really sparkling my mind…we can create a forest library in Malaysia too. Due to Malaysia got so many beautiful tropical forest, it is huge potential we have one in our own home.
The design and concept is incredible. Simple and classic. If I got the opportunity visit this Forest library, I would like to spend more than three days at here, read and read!!!Until my eyes cannot open, hehe…

Rinpoche has very strong liking towards the nature – the mountains and the lake. This is reflected in many blog posts that you so kindly make.
Environment can change people, the emotions and the thoughts.
I would love to live in this type of environment too, but may I greedily have this thought that this place has easy access to grocery stores too?
I would like to own a house at quite place like this, every morning when i wake up can smell green & also is good to go for a walk in the mountains, night time can hear the insects sound

Simple design and lay out for practical reasons. Ideal for a retreat within nature. Would not have cost an arm and a leg. Guess it’s not meant to stay in unless there’s a restroom below or an outhouse nearby. Guess the owner meant it to be a place to read, write and relax. Ideal.

The designer did put up a lot of effort into blending architecture with nature.By looking at the design,it will give you a sense of serenity.I certainly hope in time to come ,we could have a similar concept room designed for our dear Rinpoche at KFR as such a design is very suitable for meditation or just looking out into Nature at it best.May the KFR quickly manifest to benefit all those who seek outer and inner peace.
It is such a beautiful and serene library. Very ideal for our Kechara Forest Retreat land. The glass windows exudes a feeling of spaciousness that looks out to a beautiful forest. Very relaxing and calming for the mind. Thank you Rinpoche for spending endless hours researching interesting and enriching articles to share with us.
Absolutely love this library..white, clean and aircond. Lovely view outside to rest the eyes after long hours of reading. Only thing, not more than a few human, otherwise will spoil the peace. Really don’t mind spending days alone there. Maybe our retreat centres could be modelled like this with sofa bed and bathroom & kitchenette downstairs.
Oh dear.. It’s advance, modern yet so close to the mother nature. This idea of structure never came into my mind before. To me, to be able to be so close to the nature INSIDE the forest can only be wooden hurts, open concept and etc. Wow.. look at this.. it’s inside a concrete box! we can on air conditional when it’s hot! We can open all the windows when it’s windy! Amazing! PERFECT IDEA FOR KECHARA FOREST RETREAT! Don’t you tempting to have one??????
This is a nice and comfortable place to read and work in. Very simple, very Zen yet it is functional. I can only imagine the sound of bird chirping and sound of other forest inhabitants while reading a book in this study.
It is beautiful, serene and close to nature. It’s paradise in the woods. Perfect place to read a book and contemplate deeply. Hopefully in the process of building it, not too many tress have to be sacrificed!
WOW!!!Truly beautiful and excellent idea .. i don’t mind staying there,can leave the hectic life,just relax and read Dharma books ….Even if we turn to four corners of the library we are sure to see greens… and the colour green always make us feel calm, balanced,relaxing and harmonious…and it’s good to have natural bright light in the morning…
A very unique unusual design, very ideal for serene and peaceful concentration and meditation. With the large windows creating a panoramic view of the forestry surroundings, it of course does create a very natural magnificient charming retreat environment for studies and relaxation. What could make a better office than this. Its really a dream, which makes you feel out when you are really indoors!

哇。。好摩登以及感觉好休闲的一间书房，坐落在世外桃源的树林根本就不会有压力与烦恼。在这样的环境做禅修，静坐或者阅读感觉太棒了！很适合在克切拉禅修林建造一间给予仁波切，仁波切可以在这样美好的环境下做禅修，那该多好。
Perfect design for those of us who love nature and the outdoors and at the same time would like to have all the mod cons. I love how the design offers enough light and a sense of seclusiveness. Of course the land plays a crucial part.
The 5_ acre land at KFR is perfect for something like this, with the addition of a beautiful view of the hills.

This is a simple and functional library. User of this library is connected to nature through the glassed windows.
This can be easily put up at KFR at any time by ourselves.

Can I imagine a better reading room/office ? i can but its not going to improve on it very much. I believe some more rustic treatment to the grey concrete walls may blend the bldg better into the environment.
I believe the attractive feature is in its simplicity of design – both in form and function. The cuboid shape is most appropriate. It reminds me of my university days when its huge multi storey library building have a special floor where little cubicles with soft lighting are available for research students. A relaxing reading room environment do make a difference in one’s concentration and sense of pleasantness.
This is what I called living in the woods in simplicity and yet comfortably. Good design.
What a wonderful piece of design, very inspiring, serene, the kind of place that frees the mind so one can focus on his study or practice, no distraction, only visula surrounding that supports the working of the mind….

What a lovely concept!Bringing the forest into one’s study! Having a study retreat in the forest! The large windows open out to receive a panoramic view of forest trees. Build this in Kechara Forest Retreat and there will be the view of lake and hills as well.
How perfect, how serene and blissfully quiet it will be: this study for Rinpoche built in KFR – a retreat within a retreat!

Simple yet modern and innovative library. Imagine we also have one in Malaysia, would be fabulous!
The whole environment embodies the nature of the forest, the lights, the sun and the fresh air, very peaceful and zen feel!
This is such a beautiful library. It would be such an ideal place for a writer. Usually, writers will get a ‘writer’s block’ in the city. I think that that ‘block’ will not occur in such a beautiful place. I hope that in Kechara Forest Retreat and KWPC, we will be able to have something like this. It would so wonderful to be surrounded constantly by the everlasting tranquility of nature.

Imagine this place where we can enjoy the same facility with the extra of the green, woods and nature environment, it really gives a different mood from the city library.
KFR will be the perfect place. People driving to KFR passing by the forest and walking through the nature. What a wonderful place that free our mind from our busy life and just let us find peace.
What a beautiful library. We can have one built in Kechara Forest Retreat. We can be inside reading a book and yet able to enjoy the serene, lush greenery outside. This type of room is also ideal for meditation.
Rinpoche has always loved mountains and hills since he was a child, and one of Rinpoche’s dearest wishes is to retreat to a mountain or forest cave to meditate and do extensive retreats. In Rinpoche’s own words, he always feels a strong inclination to mountains, hills and mountain lakes, and this has been the case since he was younger.
During interviews in Tibet with some of Rinpoche’s previous lives students, we learned that the scenery in eastern Tibet, where Kentrul Thubten Lamsang (immediate previous incarnation of Rinpoche) had scenery exactly like that. For that reason, the pull of the mountains and hills is very strong in Rinpoche’s current life.
This study room is beautiful and inspiring. I love the sweeping green views of the forest, the coziness of the room, and particularly the idea of a cube filled with knowledge…. I so wish to create something similar in the Kechara Forest Retreat someday… And offer it to Rinpoche…

This is a very simple yet beautiful concept, bringing the forest into the living space. I know this is something Rinpoche loves very much and i hope that Rinpoche will be able to have something similar to this in the Enchanted Forest at KFR.
The design is very simple, and yet, very nice and comfortable.
Some times in the world, we do not need to have luxury things to make us happy, things can be very simple, it is just to see whether we put effort in it or not.
Having a library in the forest, hehe, what a life, reading have to be in peace, getting peace in the forest which hear no other sound except nature. isn’t it fun?

Wow!!! This idea of a house cum an office is so cool! It is amazing how creative people can get when it comes to going green.
If i had the money i would definitively find the sponsors, sources as well as the resources and build one of this for Rinpoche to stay and do Rinpoche’s work in this cube.
It looks quite small but taking a look at the inside it has actually quite a lot of space. How nice if we could have this cubes as a place for people to rent and stay in Kechara Forest Retreat.
I also went to visit there website and i found out that they have a lot of ideas on housing designs, really creative….

This would be a great idea for a meditation hut or an office. It would be wonderful to be surrounded by forests while working or meditating. It is said that by looking at plants, one’s creative side of the brain will become more active and work will become more productive and creative.
Amazing and superb… this is perhaps the most beautiful forest space I’ve ever seen! It may look very small but it certainly gives you the feel of being inside a forest and all that green space is so refreshing! What I like about it is its simplicity and how modern lifestyle is blend in and not challenging nature!
Rinpoche’s library in KFR looks just like this! Soon Rinpoche will not feel claustrophobic anymore and will be able to get clean fresh air daily which is also good for the health! Thank you JP and KFR team for bringing our Guru’s own personal wish come true!!!
Looking back at this post, pics 3-6 seem to be manifesting in Enchanted Forest in KFR. There is a library space within the Forest Ladrang that has a similar feel and view!
In fact the one in Enchanted Forest has floor to ceiling windows which makes the view even more spectacular. The Ladrang construction headed by Liaison JP Thong is shaping into a spectacular architectural beauty in the middle of forest right by a hill… Well done JP!
Fact: JP was also the person that was in charge of the building of TTDI Tsem Ladrang.
