Condensed Tsongkapa practice for Happiness & clear mind

Sep 7, 2012 | Views: 2,105

Dear friends,

About 2 weeks ago, a Vietnamese lady from San Francisco and a 21 year old boy from China came to visit Kechara. They had flown all the way from their respective home countries just to see the various work Kecharians and myself were doing here!

Metok from the US, and Yin Xi from China had saved up for their airfare, gotten in contact with Kechara’s main temple, coordinated with Kecharians to arrange for their accommodation, arrived in KL and volunteered in all of the departments any way they could. Such fuss-free, independent and passionate people! I was inspired by their efforts and thirst for Dharma that I decided to give a teaching at my private residence. The teaching was on the founder of our Gelugpa lineage, Lama Tsongkhapa. I decided to give a short and easy teaching. Not too long and not too difficult. I have condensed this teaching for everyone for easy listening and easier to retain the information for practice. Practicing this will help our mind, decrease depression/anxiety, help us to let go of the past and move on. We will be blessed to have clear and sharp mind filled with wisdom.

Together with Metok and Yin Xi, I decided to invite pastors in training and a few other people whom I thought would really benefit from the teaching. I like to invite those who during my public talks are attentive, listening carefully, take notes and really try to learn and understand.

KIM were there to film the teaching. It is a very simple yet comprehensive teaching on Lama Tsongkhapa’s practice. I went through one by one on the benefits of doing Lama Tsongkhapa’s practice, the different types of offerings that can be done and gave an explanation on the visualizations to be done for Lama Tsongkhapa’s prayers. The materials used were the books in Lama Tsongkhapa’s box set (Chinese box set) and prayers that can be found here… so if you have these items, you’re all set!

As this is a teaching on Lama Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa lineage, this teaching is very powerful in itself. However how powerful this teaching is on your personal spiritual growth, is dependent on how much you absorb and apply it. It is a 4 hour teaching… so grab a cup of tea, a notebook and enjoy! I really pray it will benefit you please.

Thank you Rinpoche for such a clear and precious teaching of Lama Tsongkapa’s practise. I’ve learnt so much and had been implementing your teachings into my daily practise and saddhana. Have also started reading the text accompanying Lama Tsongkapa box set and found more understanding of his practise. I hope more people will benefit from your teaching, as it is amazingly simple but encompass so much benefits and merits. With folded hands, Thank You.

Dear Rinpoche, I was about to send you something written by Mother Teresa on Final Analysis and here after seeing your teaching to the two visitors from China and US, I was surprised that you pull out the same thought by Mother Teresa. Infact I was in my system trying to copy that into this blog for you to see. Its wonderful to come across such rich teaching by Mother Teresa and I too put that on my table so that I can be reminded. Its intuition to both of us.
By the way, I went to Kechara last month and managed to invite two small statues(images) of Lama Tsongkapa and Lord Setrap and I practised the mantra of Lama Tsongkapa/Lord Setrap/Medicine Buddha.
    Is this good enough.

Thank you Rinpoche for giving a beautiful teaching on Lama Tsongkhapa’s Guru Yoga to everyone here. It is a privilege to hear Lama Tsongkhapa name, learn about him, and Dharma. Without Lama Tsongkhapa the tradition and teaching of Buddhism wouldn’t have spread so far and wide on this modern world. I pray that I am able to meet these teachings from life to life until the day. Rinpoche has explained the teachings very well in contemporary language for all of us to learn and practice. :)

Thank you so much Rinpoche for giving us such a profound and detailed teaching on Lama Tsongkhapa. I have been putting it into practise and reading the book. These video posted on the blog will help me to refresh my memory and add on to the notes that i have and i can view it again and again. Thank you Rinpoche for making it so simple and easy to learn, to practice and to share with others.
May more will be able to be benefited and get the blessing from Lama Tsongkhapa practice.

Special thanks to Metok and YinXi. Without you, we may not be able to have this teaching. You both also inspired me to be more appreciative to what i have now and do more!

I am very lucky to be there at that night. Thank you Rinpoche for the invitingand the videos!

On that night, Rinpoche not only teach about Lama Tsongkapa practice(technically it’s all included in Tsongkapa practice), Rinpoche talked the goal of our life, and He shared His stories with His Gurus with us, the experiences when He first arrived in Malaysia and more. Rinpoche also told us that we are extremely lucky to be able to hear, see and even to say Tsongkapa’s name. And one of the reason why we are able to hear and learn Tsongkapa’s teachings from Rinpoche, is because there were/are a lot of sponsorship from many people to support the Dharma work of Rinpoche. Everything we have today comes from donation! And from this we should think, why am I so lucky yo have my Guru sit in front of me and my Guru wants nothing from me.

Of course, Rinpoche teach about the Lama Tsongkapa’s Guru Yoga practice. He explained each of the prayers to us in a very detailed way. Rinpoche even taught us to do the long Mandala Offerings. I heard from Rinpoche’s senior students that we are lucky to learn this from Rinpoche.

Thank you KIM for helping us to do the recording. The night was long, we were tired but Rinpoche is the one who speaks tirelessly to teach us. Hope you all benefited from Rinpoche’s teachings as well. Once again, thank you to my Guru who teacher us tirelessly. I will share with everyone that I meet.

There is always so much to learn and absorb from Rinpoche, who always finds many ways to bring the dharma and truth for our consumption. Guru Yoga is a very complete practice can bring us to enlightenment or also the purelands.

Thank you for giving to us such a wonderful gift.
A practice that was passed down from generation, to generation of highly attained masters. How fortunate are we to have received this sacred and holy practice from you Rinpoche.

    Thank you.

I have had the great fortune of receiving many teachings from Rinpoche on Lama Tsongkhapa’s amazing history and practice, and although I may have heard it before, or transcribed it, or worked on the books, I continue to be bowled over, amazed and wonder-struck every single time I hear the teachings again. I am amazed at the simplicity of the practice, but at the same time, the profundity of it, the beauty and clarity of the meditation (especially those of the 7 wisdoms) and the huge peace that it brings to one’s mind just hearing the teachings.

As Rinpoche has already mentioned, we do have a very comprehensive box set of the teachings which combines the many teachings that Rinpoche has given on Tsongkhapa over the years. Rinpoche based this teaching on the book within the box-set, a kind of commentary, perhaps? So the teachings available for everyone now are very complete – including the original teachings and then, in this most recent teaching, a further explanation and elaboration of what has already been written / taught.

Rinpoche has explained before that just HEARING Tsongkhapa’s name and seeing his image requires a tremendous amount of merit. This is taught and explained throughout the monastery too. In this time and age, it is very very difficult to meet with Tsongkhapa’s teachings and requires a great deal of merit to even see him. So we can consider ourselves extremely fortunate to even be able to have access to such teachings, be so kindly given such clear explanations and to be able to start a practice immediately to create even stronger affinities.

    • Paris on Sep 16, 2012 at 2:33 pm

I wanted to add also that Rinpoche spent some time specially to explain that Lama Tsongkhapa’s practice is especially helpful and effective for people who are prone to depression or mental instability (ie their minds go up and down, experience many doubts, uncertainties, struggle to find clarity).

In these times, it is not unusual for people to feel a sense of loss, many insecurities, fears. Given that our physical environments are so comfortable now, the suffering we create for ourselves turns inwards. We suffer more on an emotional and mental level than a physical one. So this practice is especially helpful for bringing us out of these kinds of depressions, fears, insecurities.

Personally, as the queen of being Nervous and Anxious, I have found this to be extremely helpful. Reciting migtsema alone (Tsongkhapa’s mantra) brings instant peace and really does help to stabilise the mind. It’s all the more effective when done with any one of the 7-wisdoms meditations.

I hope this helps. when you’re in that state of mind, it feels like quite a bit of an effort to start, but it is well worth it and gets much, much easier and smoother as we practice and progress. The effects come about very fast and remain.

Here’s to a wonderfully peaceful practice to you all xxx

Thank you Rinpoche for posting this video that really benefits many lay people like me. It is very fortunate to have the chance to learn Tsongkhapa’s practice in these days and apply it everyday to gain merits for future lives. I have seen and observed many people outside are still in lost and trapped within their self-created problems. May Tsongkhapa’s practice reach to every being and enlighten their troubled mind, set everyone free from samsara.

  26. Joy on Jan 21, 2013 at 3:39 pm

We are so fortunate to have a Lama in our presence… we Malaysians must have collected some kind of merits to be able to have Rinpoche here with us, and to be connected with RInpoche and be working so closely with Rinpoche is definitely no coincidence!

Rinpoche gave a teaching to us recently, last night in fact that to be able to listen to a Dharma teaching, taught by a qualified master, to be able to absorb, apply and retain all comes from “merits”… hence it is why it is so improtant to collect merits and there countless ways from sweeping the floor to donating, sponsoring, to building all these collect merits with the correct motivation which will then be your “credit” to receive teachings and gain the understanding of the Dharma and apply it. Hence that is why we are so lucky if we work in Dharma center, we’re actually being paid/sponsor to do Dharma and collect merit for the ultimate goal… learning the Dharma and to gain realizations from it.

Being one of the closer student around Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, i do experience a lot of miracles, from someone who are very sick got heal or rain stop at certain moment that is urgent, some may think it’s all coincidence, let me tell you a real truth story that happened an hour ago. H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, like to rescue animals such as fishes, dogs, birds and etc. In our new Kechara Forest Retreat land, Rinpoche have kindly requested one of the liaison Beng Kooi to build a fish pond for all the fishes that Rinpoche rescued. The contractors that we got in to build the fish pond was slow and delay a few deadline that they gave. Just 2 days ago, Rinpoche instructed the fish pond project to be call off and all workers should leave the fish pond site as soon as possible. While we still thinking why Rinpoche cancel this project as it’s one of Rinpoche wishes to build a very comfortable place for fishes. Something happened an hour ago, there was a big bang came from the fish pond site, the whole artificial waterfall wall collapse without people go near it. This artificial waterfall wall was made out of cement, wire mesh, metal bar and etc, it weigh easily 200-300 Kgs. Luckily Rinpoche have giving us warming do not go near this waterfall 2 days ago, and should stop all construction wall, just imagine the workers are still working when the waterfall fall, some people might died or serious injury now. Due to humility Rinpoche will not say a word or show his premonitions power, this happened many many times. Rinpoche just save a few life without them knowing it. A lot of people will think why such horrible thing can happened in a holy land like Kechara Forest Retreat, a Buddhist site should always safe from all accident, but we believe if a place that will be use to benefiting thousands, a lot of obstacles will appear, I will take this artificial waterfall accident as part of clearing our negative karma, may all the negative karma from all of us be cleared. It’s glad that this happened before we move any fishes into this pond. In Tibetan culture, it’s an auspicious omen which represent bad obstacles have been cleared, and all our project will grow very smoothly later. It’s very important we follow our lama’s instruction/advice, even though sometime we might not understand it truly, because a real lama will never do anything which is not beneficial.

For tsemtulku – My dear Rinpoche,Alex & I met you 10 years ago. Because of your precious Dharma teachings & guidance, we are able to transform ourselves. Because of your Dharma vision, we now have 14 Departments for people with different skills & interest to be involve and for us to create merits in virtuous activities. I have been a part time vegetarian for sometime. Somehow i just wasn’t able to be a full vegetarian. After watching your teaching on “Integrity, Keeping promises & Vows”, it finally hit me. It is so true that having vows are not meant to “Imprison” us but really to help us transform positively to kick away our negative habits. I realize that from young, we have been condition to think that we have to eat meat and meat is delicious and it is part of life to consume meat in our daily diet. Hence we ignore the sufferings of others in order to indulge in our own taste buds. Lately, i have develop myself into feeding strays nearby my neighbourhood and I’m compelled to help strays via Kechara Animal Sanctuary. After deep contemplation, i realize that i cannot be wanting to help KAS and yet still eating meat. The equation is just so wrong. Now i can see clearly, it makes it so much easier to be a full vegetarian. Taking the vegetarian vow is not an imprisonment but it is another level of commitment to not be the source of pain to other sentient beings. It is a choice that we make to kick away our preconception of consuming meat for a balance diet.If one is against animal cruelty, then one should practice vegetarianism. Can’t be pitching for animal rights when you are still eating them. My daughter once said to me, “Mommy, animals are our friends so we shouldn’t be eating them”. I find that so profound coming from a kid. I’m very sure my family members will not be supportive of me going vegetarian but I pray that one day they will also come to the same realization as i have.
I humbly offer to Rinpoche my vegetarian vow and may it be dedicated to Rinpoche’s long life. May it also be dedicated to my family, loved ones and friends.
I will continue to get involve in KAS activities to assist Pastor Susan.
    Thank you my dear Lama.

Most amusing is this unparalleled ingenuity of the highly inspired dramatic slogan (self-explanatory) in the cover picture of http://www.facebook.com/MBFSG?fref=ts which HHDL and all Buddhas of the past, Buddhas of the present and Buddhas yet tocome, correspondingly are bowing their heads in deferential obeisance. Are we now transported to the Age of Somnambulism??? To earthlings, the most crucial life sustaining factor is NO AIR, NO LIFE, in so far as planet Earth and basic common sense are concerned.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Everyone wanted her to stay home and rest and she insists on coming to help. Wow. Tsem Rinpoche

Nobody wanted this bird due the fact his beak is deformed. Well I want him. He was full of mites and we have treated him. He will live in a huge aviary with plenty of space, sunshine and space to fly in Kechara Forest Retreat. Welcome little bird to love and care.~Tsem Rinpoche

Kyabje Chatral Rinpoche: "I am just an ordinary sentient being and there is nothing special about me. I just follow the teachings of Lord Buddha. Without any cheating on my part, I stand firmly on the ground in practicing the Dharma and in helping all sentient beings. I wish that all sentient beings could let go of the acts of self-deception and self-aggrandizement, so that they can really practice the Dharma in order to liberate themselves from cyclic existence and to help other sentient beings. Otherwise, it will be too late when they are feeling remorseful!"

We should have compassion for butchers. When we stop eating meat, we don’t make create the causes for them to slaughter animals contributing to their killing karma. We may say it’s ok to eat meat, but someone has to do the killing and collect the negative karma. Go vegetarian. It’s good for the butchers, the animals and ourselves.~Tsem Rinpoche

Kechara Liaisons are leaders who head and run our 13 depts within Kechara. Liaison Paul heads the arts, statue making, florist and Gompa depts. Yes he has huge portfolios. And he does a good job! Paul took a group of people to Kechara Forest Retreat today with Pastor Yek Yee to introduce to them about our projects. Paul tirelessly/kindly talks to many people this way. It's people like Paul who contributes to Kechara reaching out to many and benefitting them. When we do dharma and not see it as work, it's never a burden. We should see it as a way for ourselves to grow and creating the space for others to grow also. Kind people like Paul inspire me. Thank you Paul. Tsem Rinpoche

Congratulations to Andrew Boon! He has requested and I have agreed for him to be in charge and oversee till completion the large outdoor Medicine Buddha on the hill project in Kechara Forest Retreat. Andrew will also carry on his other portfolios of writing and Ladrang work. I am very proud of him and congratulate him for his commitment, tenacity and sheer good motivation to do this project. When our Kecharians move up, take on more and accept more dharma work, it shows they have grown inside and will help others to grow! I offer my prayers to the Three Jewels for Andrew and all the people who will be benefitted by the presence of this sacred outdoor Buddha for the public! Humbly, Tsem Rinpoche

A change from not noticing anything to springing to action: When I have a migraine as I do now, Seng Piow without me saying anything will jump up and start grabbing the massage sticks to poke/prod/rub the pressure points on my neck to relieve my migraine. That is true kindness/love/appreciation/care manifesting into action. Different from before.- I like when I am/was a cause for someone to become more caring. If indeed I was the cause I may say humbly. Thank you Seng Piow for your care. Thank you everyone who has become more caring. Your lives become richer and you enhance the lives around you. That is dharma. That is fulfilling for me and yourselves. Tsem Rinpoche

Aki is the old African Grey that was abandoned by his owner. Because he is old, no one wanted him. Well we wanted him and we took him and in and love him. He is in a big aviary and he likes his cage. We leave his cage open at all times so he can go in and out as he likes. His cage is his security blanket. Cute. He gets nice food and sunshine daily and also we play monks chanting for him to be blessed. We love you Aki. Tsem Rinpoche

This little birdie was at a pet shop. He has maimed leg, permanent damage to his wing and cannot fly and also one eye blind. I don't think anyone would want the poor thing, so I adopted him and keep him safe, fed and with lots of fresh air. He's also in a large aviary so he can be with other birds and not be alone. He is alert, active, and has a good appetite. I like him very much and will make sure he is safe, happy and has a good life. I name him Lucky. Lucky will always be safe now. Tsem Rinpoche

Dear all, This is Paris interviewing my sister Lidshma. She mentions when I was very young the monks would have me sit with them to do the Buddhist services which was highly irregular in New Jersey. They didn't have lay people even children sit with them to do the services. So she mentions this was very unusual in a good way. My sister Lidshma here mentions my mother (Dana) would always catch me in the night in my room in the dark sitting on my bed meditating and doing mantras. I did that always and had to avoid being caught by my mother. I did it nightly. So I did it secretly and without her catching me. If she did catch me, then there would be big drama and problems depending on the mood my mom was in. My practicing dharma/meditating/praying/mantras was not allowed at all by my parents. They were fiercely against it always. My sister remembers this here. My sister lives in Texas, USA. And our bio group had gone to USA to interview my family for my bio book. This is a snippet.
