Polish pensioner finds two-metre anaconda in toilet

A 73-year-old Polish pensioner was shocked to find a two-metre- (6.5-foot-) long anaconda peering up out of her toilet bowl Monday in her flat in Wroclaw, south-west Poland, local police said.

Polish pensioner finds two-metre anaconda in toilet

“After she raised the lid of the toilet seat, the lady saw a huge snake that wanted to slither out of the toilet bowl. She immediately slammed down the toilet lid and called us,” Wroclaw police spokesman Pawel Petrykowski told AFP. “She was certainly very frightened but managed to keep her wits about her,” he said.

After arriving on the scene, police and an employee from the local zoo managed to catch the reptile, native to South America.

N.Zealand school under fire over possum-throwing contest

A New Zealand school that staged a possum-throwing contest came under fire from animal protection groups Wednesday for encouraging students in the “morally wrong” practice.

N.Zealand school under fire over possum-throwing contest

The contest, in which students swung possum carcasses over their heads and hurled them across the playground, was unacceptable, the New Zealand Royal Society for the Protection of Animals said.

RSPCA manager Danny Auger said he had received three complaints about the competition at Colyton School, in the North Island, and would raise concerns with its teachers.

“While it’s technically not illegal, it’s morally wrong to throw a dead animal around.” Auger told the Manawatu Standard newspaper.

“It’s about time that people wake up and smell 2010 and realise that these sorts of things shouldn’t be happening. It’s an archaic practice and it should be stopped.”

He said if students were taught that throwing around possums was acceptable, they could do the same to pets such as cats.

Possums are protected in their native Australia but regarded as a pest in New Zealand, where the population exploded after they were introduced in the 19th century in an attempt to start a fur trade.

The Department of Conservation said they threaten native bird species and delicate ecosystems.

Mozambique: Train-animal crashes blamed on angry ancestors

Residents of the central Mozambican province of Sofala believe angry ancestral spirits are causing trains to crash into animals after collisions that killed a hippopotamus and 35 head of cattle.

Mozambique: Train-animal crashes blamed on angry ancestors

Residents say the ancestors are dissatisfied with the traditional ceremonies conducted when the Sena rail line, which connects the Indian Ocean port city of Beira to the interior, was reactivated in 2008 after 25 years of disuse, reported state broadcaster Radio Mocambique.

Their concerns emerged after a train ran over a hippopotamus last week while doing maintenance work on the line close to the Zambezi River.

An accident on a separate rail line in southern Mozambique killed 35 head of cattle on Sunday night when a national railway locomotive en route to neighbouring Swaziland ran over the herd in a difficult-to-access area, Radio Mocambique said.

Superfast mobile 3G networks boom: UN telecoms agency

Superfast third generation (3G) mobile phone networks have expanded nearly tenfold in four years, outstripping fixed line broadband, the UN’s telecoms agency said on Wednesday.

Superfast mobile 3G networks boom: UN telecoms agency

The International Telecommunications Union predicted that 3G — which allows users to watch TV and access the Internet from their phones — would exceed 900 million subscriptions worldwide by the end of this year as the pace of expansion continued to accelerate.

At the beginning of 2010, 3G capacity could accomodate 667 million subscriptions worldwide, compared to 73 million four years earlier, the ITU said in a statistics survey.

“While these aren’t all necessarily active subscriptions, the growing number highlights the vast potential wireless technologies hold,” it added.

“ITU has set a clear target by recommending that at least half the world’s people have access to broadband by 2015.”

Over the same period, global fixed line broadband subscriptions rose from 216 million to 479 million.

Third generation now accounts for 14 percent of all mobile telecoms subscriptions compared to three percent in 2006.

But poor nations appear to be left out, as penetration rates for fixed or mobile broadband remain very low in developing countries, just above three percent of inhabitants, according to the ITU.

The fixed broadband figure is barely higher than the agency’s estimate three years ago.

“Tremendous achievements have been made over the past five years in bringing broadband access to millions of people around the world — but much more needs to be done,” the ITU said.

Man who swam Channel with no arms and legs ‘happiest alive’

A French father-of-two who swam across the Channel 16 years after losing all his limbs in an electrical accident said Sunday that he was “the happiest man alive.”

Man who swam Channel with no arms and legs 'happiest alive'

Philippe Croizon, a 42-year-old former metalworker, said he had performed his feat to inspire all those “who think life is nothing but suffering.”

He set off from Folkestone in southern England just before 8:00 am on Saturday, and arrived on the French coast near Wissant just before 9:30 pm, propelled by his specially designed flipper-shaped prosthetic legs.

Steadying himself with the stumps of his arms, Croizon kept up a constant speed in good weather and was accompanied by wild dolphins for part of the 33-kilometre (20-mile) crossing, his support team said.

“For a while, I didn’t realise what I’d done. It was only that night, when I went to bed, that suddenly I burst out laughing, and told myself, ‘You did it!’,” he told AFP by telephone from his home in northern France.

In 1994 Croizon was hit by a 20,000-volt charge as he attempted to remove a television aerial from a house roof and an arc of current surged through him from a nearby powerline.

“I was on my hospital bed, they’d just finished cutting off my last leg. You can imagine how that felt. And then I saw a television documentary on a female swimmer who crossed the Channel,” he explained.

“There and then, I asked myself: ‘Why not me one day?’,” he said.

Croizon trained for two years and last month completed a 12-hour swim between the ports of Noirmoutier and Pornic on France’s Atlantic coast, but his final Channel crossing was much faster than he had anticipated.

“At one point I told myself, ‘Woah, slow down, you’ll never get there if you try to keep up this speed’. I wanted to slow down, but I couldn’t. The motor was running,” he said, adding that he had expected to be at sea for 24 hours.

“It was huge. I was in the zone. I was inside my head. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone,” he said, declaring that his next long-distance challenge will be to swim between Europe and Africa.

Experts bite back at bedbug infestations

Killing a single bedbug can be as easy as rolling on top of it in your sleep, but ridding a home or hotel of its siblings and cousins, is an exhausting and expensive task.

Experts bite back at bedbug infestations

Nearly eliminated a few decades ago, bedbugs have returned to America with a vengeance.

They’ve overtaken college dorms, military barracks, apartment complexes, office buildings and even forced the closure of Nike’s flagship New York store on Monday.

And they are big business: $258 million were spent battling them in the United States last year, according to the National Pest Management Association.

Leading experts gathered in a Chicago suburb on Tuesday for a two-day summit on eradicating the hardy critters, which can live a year without feeding and like to explore at night, often catching rides to new homes in luggage, handbags and clothing.

“It’s easy to come in and kill bedbugs with insecticide, but it’s much harder to get to the point where you can be confident that they’re gone,” Kenneth Haynes, an entomologist with the University of Kentucky, told AFP.

Bedbugs are very good at hiding, he explained, and the problem is finding a poison which is powerful enough to kill all the bugs and their eggs but safe enough to be used indoors.

The summit’s showroom was filled with potential solutions: massive room heaters to bake the bugs, carbon dioxide sprayers to freeze the bugs, high powered steamers to boil the bugs, plastic moats and barriers to block the bugs from getting into beds, tight-fitting mattress protectors, and even specially-trained dogs to sniff out their hiding spots.

“There’s so much bedbug hysteria and 75 percent of it is well-founded,” said David James, whose company Packtite sells portable heating chambers designed to kill any critters that crawl into luggage or non-washable possessions like books and shoes.

“They’re so bad out there and they’re so hard to kill,” James said as he manned a busy display at the sold-out show.

“I’ve had people call me and say they’ve gone bankrupt trying to get rid of them because they keep replacing their clothes and furniture.”

There is unfortunately no silver bullet for eradicating bed bugs, said Phillip Cooper, president of BedBug Central, a for-profit educational organization which hosted the conference.

“Nothing works on its own,” said Cooper, who also runs a pest-control company founded by his father in 1955.

The best thing to do is try to keep bed bugs out of your home by carefully inspecting hotel rooms, washing all clothes taken on a trip in hot water and vacuuming or treating your luggage.

If you end up picking up the critters at work, a movie theatre, church or work, hope that you find them quick and call a professional right away.

A moderate infestation can be eradicated with a single, properly-applied treatment of insecticide, Cooper said. But serious infestations can require several treatments and a multiprong approach costing thousands of dollars.

One way large hotel and apartment complexes are cutting their costs is hiring sniffer dogs to pinpoint exactly which units are affected and find the nests.

A property manager at a large apartment complex outside Chicago, Shellie Beno, got into the business last year after residents started bringing her bags filled with bedbugs.

Pest controllers would spend hours tearing an apartment apart looking for nests. Her three dogs can search a typical unit in about five to seven minutes. And their noses can sniff out places people can’t, like behind the walls.

Another advantage is the dogs are much less intrusive and residents don’t have to worry that their neighbors will know they’ve got bugs.

“Would you rather have me going through your dresser drawers or my dogs?” said her Detective Bedbug partner David Bohannan.

German scientists discover rare ape species in Asia

German scientists said on Tuesday they had discovered a new rare and endangered ape species in the tropical rainforests between Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia by its distinctive song.

German scientists discover rare ape species in Asia

The new type of crested gibbon, one of the most endangered primate species in the world, is called the northern buffed-cheeked gibbon or Nomascus annamensis, a statement from the German Primate Centre (DPZ) said.

“The discovery of a new species of ape is a minor sensation,” said Christian Roos from the DPZ.

“An analysis of the frequency and tempo of their calls, along with genetic research, show that this is, in fact, a new species.”

The distinctive song “serves to defend territory or might even be a precursor of the music humans make,” the statement added.

The male of the new species is covered with black fur that appears silver in sunlight. His chest is brownish and his cheeks deep orange-golden in colour. The females are orange-beige in colour.

Crested gibbons are found only in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and southern China. Scientists had assumed there were six different species but the recent discovery takes the number to seven.

Gibbons have become endangered due to illegal hunting. “Gibbons are kept as cute pets, or they are eaten, or they are processed into traditional medicines,” said the DPZ.

Many species number only around 100 individuals, said Roos. Scientists currently have “absolutely no idea” how many of the new species might be alive, but are conducting further study to determine this, he told AFP.

Like orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos, gibbons belong to the apes, man’s closest relative.

“Only if we know where which species is found and how many individuals there are can we start with serious conservation actions,” added the scientist.

News of the discovery was published in the Vietnamese Journal of Primatology.

Bangladesh farmers turn to ‘frog weddings’

Farmers in a parched district of northern Bangladesh are marrying off frogs in a desperate bid to bring on monsoon rains and protect their crops, local officials said Wednesday.

Bangladesh farmers turn to 'frog weddings'

Bangladesh suffered its driest July in decades, prompting farmers to turn to the centuries-old rain-making ritual of celebrating frog marriages, officials say.

“There have been lot of frog marriages as there has been hardly any rainfall here even though it’s monsoon season,” Sadullahpur district government administrator Ariful Haq said.

At a frog wedding in Ramchandrapur village, 300 villagers dressed in their best clothes attended the festivities, said Tajul Islam, who was at the wedding.

“The frog bride and groom are highly decorated with a red streak of colour on their forehead and carried in a special basket to a banana-leaf stage,” he said.

“Villagers sing songs, make offerings of rice and grass, then after the ceremony the married frogs are released in the village pond,” he said, adding that all the village children then got traditional sweets.

Monsoon rains normally sweep Bangladesh from June to September, with the country receiving more than 75 percent of its annual rainfall during this period.

In July, usually the wettest month of the year, Bangladesh received 36 percent less rain than last year, said Shah Alam, deputy chief of the weather department.

“The rainfall in July was the lowest in the last three decades,” he said.

Scientists say Bangladesh is one of the countries worst hit by the effects of climate change with extreme weather conditions such as drought and flooding likely to increase in future.

“The situation is horrible. The farmers hardly have enough water to plant paddy crops. The water bodies have dried up,” Sadullahpur district government administrator Haq said.

Internet upgraded to foil cyber crooks

The Internet has undergone a key upgrade that promises to stop cyber criminals from using fake websites that dupe people into downloading viruses or revealing personal data.

Internet upgraded to foil cyber crooks

The agency in charge of managing Internet addresses teamed with online security services firm VeriSign and the US Department of Commerce to give websites encrypted identification to prove they are legitimate.

“This is, by any measure, an historic development,” ICANN chief executive Rod Beckstrom said while breaking the news at a premier Black Hat computer security conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

“This security upgrade matters to everyone who uses a computer, and that means most of us.”

The Domain Name System Security Extensions, referred to as DNSSEC, basically adds a secret, identifying code to each website address.

The domain name system is where the world’s Internet addresses are registered and plays a key role in enabling computers around the world to speak with one another online.

Applications commonly used on the Internet can be tailored to essentially check the ID of a website to make certain it is what it claims to be, according to Dan Kaminsky, a hacker turned computer security specialist.

For example, web browser software such as Google or Bing could be adapted to tell whether a bank log-in page is authentic.

“When a user receives an email from a bank they should know it came from a bank,” Kaminsky said. “This is something we needed as engineers to make this a reality.”

A frightening structural flaw in the foundation of the Internet revealed by Kaminsky at Black Hat here two years earlier led to the “biggest structural” upgrade to Web in decades, according to Beckstrom.

“I can’t say I really knew what I was getting into when I broke that whole DNS thing,” Kaminsky quipped as he took part in a press conference announcing the Internet improvement.

Kaminsky is chief scientist at New York start-up Recursion Ventures and worked with ICANN and VeriSign on the the Internet upgrade.

Internet engineers have been toiling on DNSSEC for 18 years, but technical and political obstacles stalled progress, Internet Engineering Task Force chairman Russ Housely said in a video call from a meeting of the group in the Netherlands.

“It can be thought of as tamper-proof packaging for the domain name structure,” Housely said.

“The whole Internet engineering community is excited by this development.”

He added that IETF members at the meeting toasted the announcement with champagne which “I assure you is not a common occurrence at a gathering of engineers.”

It will take time for Internet firms to take advantage of DNSSEC and for it to be applied to local domains in every country, according to Kaminsky.

“We are on Day One of a multi-year journey,” Kaminsky said.

DNSSEC strips cyber criminals of being able to do attacks that involve manipulating code to redirect people from legitimate websites to fake pages rigged with malicious code or asking for passwords and other valuable data.

“This provides a high level of protection with minimal disruption,” said VeriSign chief executive Mark McLaughlin.

“It is not a panacea for everything, but it is a good start.”

Times must be tough for the Galactic Empire. According to The Daily Mail, a UK newspaper, a six-foot man dressed as the villainous Darth Vader robbed a bank in Long Island, New York. When man first entered the bank, staff and customers thought it was a joke. Their amusement quickly turned to shock when he took out a handgun and demanded cash.

Reportedly, one of the customers tried joking with the towering Sith Lord, thinking the wardrobe to be quite silly. He was quickly rebuffed when the man, gun in hand, screamed, “This is not a joke” to cashiers.

Admittedly, not very Vader-ish language.

‘Rabbit-fearing’ German teacher loses case against pupil

A German court on Tuesday threw out the case of a schoolteacher against a pupil who had allegedly been tormenting her by scrawling pictures of rabbits on the blackboard.

'Rabbit-fearing' German teacher loses case against pupil

The court in Vechta, northern Germany declined to hear the complaint of the teacher, who was seeking an injunction against the 16-year-old girl to stop her from making the drawings or claiming the plaintiff had a paralysing fear of rabbits.

“The plaintiff now has a month to appeal the verdict,” the court’s chief judge Mechthild Beckermann said, declining to elaborate.

Witnesses had told the judge that the teacher ran sobbing out of the classroom when she saw the image of a rabbit on the blackboard. The girl denied making the drawings.

Two years ago at another school, the teacher took a pupil to court and reached a settlement in which the teenager agreed never again to claim that the plaintiff “freaked out” when she saw a rabbit or heard the word.

UFO sighted at Malaysian beach resort

If you’re Malaysian, rejoice! We haven’t escaped the notice of suspected extraterrestials. We’ll let you decide if the following is a precursor to a full-scale invasion or a routine sampling of our country’s famously varied food.

The serene atmosphere at a beach resort near the city of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah was quickly broken when a UFO allegedly appeared in the sky without warning on Saturday evening, according to Harian Metro, a Malaysian paper.

One witness, 27-year old Jemas Dungil, reported seeing a round, blue object floating in the air that turned green seconds later.

The appearance of the UFO (unidentified flying object) was reportedly witnessed by several Tuaran Beach Resort staff members and guests. They claimed that the object emitted blue and green light, floated in the air for a minute, and then vanished in a blink of an eye.

While some witnesses claimed to have successfully captured images of the object with their handphones, others asserted that their mobile phones mysteriously “went dead” when they attempted to do so.

Harian Metro noted that Malaysia’s first recorded UFO sighting took place in the 1950s. A man allegedly saw a flying saucer in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The last UFO sighting apparently happened in 1999 at Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat.

Scientists devise guide to the perfect handshake

Help is here for people who are overcome with nerves when faced with the age-old custom of shaking hands — British scientists have unveiled a step-by-step guide to the perfect handshake.

Scientists devise guide to the perfect handshakeResearchers at the University of Manchester, in northwest England, said on Thursday that the biggest problems were sweaty palms, limp wrists, gripping too hard and lack of eye contact.

Geoffrey Beattie, the university’s head of psychological sciences, came up with a mathematical formula which took into account 12 key measures needed to convey trust and respect to the recipient.

They include vigour, eye contact and hand temperature.

“The human handshake is one of the most crucial elements of impression formation and is used as a source of information for making a judgment about another person,” he said.

The researcher added he was surprised “that up until now there has not been a guide showing people how they should shake hands,” which has been a traditional greeting and a key part of business deals for thousands of years.

Beattie’s steps to the perfect handshake, for both men and women, are: use the right hand; a complete grip and a firm squeeze (but not too strong); a cool and dry palm; approximately three shakes, with a medium level of vigour, held for no longer than two to three seconds.

The handshake must also be executed with eye contact kept throughout and a good natural smile with an appropriate verbal statement, according to the scientist.

Stock Xchng (Stock Xchng)

Used in treating certain inflammatory bowel disorders like ulcerative colitis. The process comes in a series of enemas given to the patient over a course of 5 days. A sample of poop is taken from a healthy donor and turned into liquid for anal insertion. The healthy bacteria will grow in the target patient, ultimately healing him or her. If that’s not gross enough, fecal bacteriotherapy can also be administered via a tube in the nose!

Virtual Dolphin Therapy

AP File Photo (AP File Photo)

This particular therapy is cheap and simple. Zero props required. It’s all in your head, man. The process sounds excessively simple, but surprisingly has produced positive results. One simply has to lie down on a couch without shutting one’s eyes. Then imagine watching dolphins play around underwater as you focus your auditory senses to the sounds of the ocean. This peculiar treatment claims to bring a deep state of Zen-like relaxation and rejuvenation.

Hope you all enjoyed the strange and interesting news from around the world to help you relax from the daily grind. Read the news. Do a round of Migtseymas. Have some tea and remember, everything is not as it seems according to our perceptions. It is only weird as we have labels. Ultimately everything in Samsara is weird. I do not necessarily agree or promote anything I have blogged here. It is just ‘interesting’ news to share with my interesting friends around the world.

Not surprising when snakes can enter your home. Then show themselves at places where you least expected them to be. And you wonder how the snake can get in. I understand Anaconda are said to have come fronm the Amazon river. How then did it appear in Poland. For snake to be 6.5 foot is large. I myself have encountered an experience with a smaller snake. It was a long time ago. And I don’t remember what species it belong to. But I remember where I found the snake. I found the snake in one of my shoe box which was placed at the bottom of 9 other boxes on top with shoes inside. Before going out I decide to take my shoe to wear. When I open the lid there was this snake staring at me. Off course I called for help and had it taken out. But the mysterious part of it is. How did the snake get into the bottom box with the lid on.

Waw good and interesting read! Thank you very much Rinpoche for putting together and sharing these news, stories from around the world. It is always good to learn something new, increase our general knowledge and awareness of the world around us, the world we live in.

Personally, it is not healthy if we are insular…and that does not mean literally living on an island! It is always good to take a step outside, be it from our table, office, house, country to see, hear, taste, learn, share, feel, touch what is out there – sometimes it means just next door to note and bond with people and events.

We are so lucky to have the internet which gives us easy and instant access to information. We are learning faster than ever and gobbling up new, stories facts like never before…

As long as we are open minded and remain so and not be judgmental … our journey of discovery never ends…what may be wrong to us may be just a way of life with our fellow men. our counterparts on the other side of the globe…

Who are we to say right or wrong when we are not in their shoes? But at least we can sincerely say we can try, do try, to see from their perspectives. Embrace the wprld, the diversities, individualities, the what if’s, the what’s that, who’s done what … stay current!

And I must say that is one of the reason why I like reading Rinpoche’s blog, – it is a good mix of everything – food for the soul that caters to everyone at their level!

Bed bugs! Oh how I hate the pungent smell of it when you accidently roll over it when you are sleeping. These bugs will always creep into the 4 corners of the seam of your pillows. And your bolster too if you have one. And also at the edges of your mattress. I heard it thrives on wood. In the Chinese tranlated it is translated as wood bugs. When I was small I live in an old house where the flooring is made of wood. Especially in olden day houses you will find a lot of bed bugs. Before I sleep I use to catch and throw them away. Surprisingly I don’t hear about bed bugs in Malaysia these days.

Marriage with a dog,a dolphin or a cobra! Strange but true. Eating dog dung to cure throat inflammation! Well just perceive it is not dog dung but medicine to threat throat inflammation. In samsara everything is weird, and anything is possible.

Thank you Rinpoche for posting these interesting bizarre articles to widen our perception in life.

Why can’t Maggots be used for retreatments to heal when there also the same look alike type of maggots that can be used asnd fried and eaten in Thailand as delicasies. In China cockroaches are killed and dried and put among the other dried herbs to make herbal drinks to cure sickness. What I am going to tell you about another story is true. Among the olden Chinese when a woman in confinement develops pneumonia. The old people and sinseh will recommend droppings from the pidgeons be boiled with herbs ands given to the sick woman to drink as pneumonia can be fatal and she can die.

The children may not have any bad motive when they start throwing dead possums around. They take it as fun because of their ignorance and because of ego in a competition when they feel great when they win a challenge. In this case the children are not at fault but the school who organise this type of sport to the students. In schools morality should be taught not to hurt animals or even to abuse animals that are dead. The world is trying to pro mote the awareness of protecting animals and not to take advantage in abusing them in the form of sports like what people in Thailand are doing by engaging in cockfighting.

Among the Chinese communities in families where ladies have given birth. The Chinese are the only race that use beers to bathe mothers in confinement and new born babies. Now even in the western world business are opened to cater for rejuvenation purposes. It is said for the Chinese when a baby is born. The baby has a lot of impurities when he was in the mothers womb. Heat rashes will form causing the baby to get sick. Bathing the baby with beer or sometimes stout will purify the babies system. As for the mother it is also the same. And also juvenating at the same time. This sort of bath have to be taken for at least one month or more everyday.

Strange, Interesting, Obscure, Weird, whatever it is, each one of us has our own judgements and opinions on each of the articles found in here. It is interesting to note how our individual judgement has derived from our minds and thoughts, and what our reaction is to reading each article whilst comparing it with someone else from a different culture and exposure. How has these perceptions and labels come about? As Rinpoche mentioned, it is through years of ‘learned’ perceptions that we have been exposed to thus resulting in our own classification and labelling of external stimuli from our senses. It is then that we are attached to our thoughts, in judging whether something is weird or reasonable, good or bad, positive or negative, and through that, we react.

Nonetheless, thank you for the post, Rinpoche! It was very….interesting. Covered a broad spectrum of news. A pleasant read and teaching :) .

I won’t say that I don’t believe that the residents in Mozambique say that their ancestors are not happy with the traditional ceremonies done during the reactivation of the Senal Rail line connecting the Indian Ocean Port City of Beira to the interior in 2008 after 25 years of disuse. As the dead ancestors are spirits and are formless they show their anger by destroying a hippopotamus working on maintenance on a line close to Zambezi River. Another incident happened in Southern Mozambique. When a herd of cattles was run over at night by a rail line going to a remote area in Swaziland. At this two areas of the rail line some of the residents ancestors may have worked in these 2 rail lines when they were alive. Or if we take it in a Dharma thinking this may be due to Karma which have taken fruition in the Hippopotamus and the herd of 35 cattles.

It may seem strange that this Taiwan man marries a ‘goddess’. But how do you know whether this is a goddess called Lotus Fairy. She only appear in a dream. Dreams can be deceiving. Because the man Lin has gone to this temple to seek and solve his problems of broken relationships from the Deity. Lin’s mind may be playing on him. Since he had so many failed relationships that makes him unhappy. The thought that a goddess will not fail him as earthlings would. So he is obsessed with the dream that he has and believed that it is the goddess that he has married and givi ng him protection. I believe it is his own mind that has given him the stability and confidence. It may be also be a pschiatric problem.

I can feel the spicy hot chilli burning in my system already without having to swallow it. What more gobbling 51 fire hot chillis. When we can’t take more than 5 hot chilli padi at any one time. Then smearing the eyes with the world’s spiciest chillis called ghost chillis. Imagine the eyes are a very sensitive part of our body. And also imagine to attempt to enter the Guinness World Records in 2009. 28 years old Anandita Dutta Tamuly is doing all the above. I guess she must be a Hindu and spiritual also. She does not think of the consequences that would have occurred. Taking the risk of entering the Guinness Book of Records without even knowing whether she can be nominated yet. I guess the gods may have helped her and put her into meditative state to do these feats.

When Selva Kumar married the 10 year old female dog he was already matured. But he was paralysed on the legs and hands and lost his hearing. He realised that the cause of his handicap was due to his bad karma of stoning two dogs to death when they were found mating. This happen when he was a teenager. Hinduism is like Budhhism which he believe in purification and Karma. Now Selva Kumar feels he must balance up his Karma and free his mind of guilt of killing. He feels by marrying this female dog called Selvi whom he thinks may be the dog he has killed and has taken rebirth again for him to take care of her as a repentance.

It is not surprising that this German man married his cat because the cat has been a companion to him like lovers except that in normal circumstances it will not be this way. Animals minus their being able to talk can also have emotion.Uwe Mitzseherlich must have loved his cat so much that he is prepared to pay about 300 euros for a witness to his marriage to the cat Cecilia. Cecilia the cat got sick and when taken to the vet by the German man Uwe Mitzseherlich was told that his cat will not have long to live. If we talk about past like I think the marriage of this German to the cat in her previous life did not work out. So in this life when she take rebirth as a cat to finish the connection and relationship before she goes to another rebirth.

I see trees rustling in the gentle evening breeze. Nearby lake with gentle fishes full and content… Birds flying overhead. Grass growing abundantly. Flowers so colorful and the green hill in the nearby distance beckoning me to come home…in my room is a large and ancient Buddha statue with butterlamps flames dancing on the face..I see this in my minds eye and wish to be in the forest…my only longing and only wish..will it ever manifest? Dear friends, This is a well made Paranormal real life story. Nothing scary in this episode, but very powerful show of love and willpower. I want you to please watch this carefully and see how a mother reaches out to save her child. Her will was so strong she left her body. The child saw a light leaving the mother and going to the road although she died and ‘found’ people to save her child. Very touching and beautiful story. Dear friends, It is so fortunate I have the good karma that I took rebirth in dharma, near my great masters and to become a monk. I always contemplate how lucky I am to have taken this human form and come across dharma.
Just think when I was seven years old in Howell, New Jersey, I was living ten mins away from a living Master Kensur Lobsang Tharchin who was a direct disciple of His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, HH Trijang Rinpoche and HH Zong Rinpoche. What are the chances of that??? In Howell, New Jersey of all places!! I don’t think it was a coincidence, but it was the culmination of the little bit of dharma I must have done in my previous lives as ordinary silly persons. Whatever the karma I created to be among these masters, their lineage and teachings, I am doing my best to replicate in this life, so my next life will have the same fortune. I don’t want to revert back to being empty handed in my next life…
Can you imagine, in 1979 Howell, New Jersey His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited our temples there. And I had the incredible chance to feast my samsaric eyes on His golden face. I was just 14 years old and I didn’t go to India to see Him, but His Holiness came to Howell, New Jersey where I was living ten mins away!!! Then I also recieved the 8 Verses of Thought transformation teachings/commentary from His Holiness Dalai Lama at that time and oral transmission of Om Mani Peme Hung. I cried and cried and was overwhelmed at that time. I could not believe and still cannot I recieved teachings from Chenresig Himself. I had painted a four armed Avalokitesvara painting with my self composed (silly prayers) written on the back and offered to His Holiness directly..From deep inside of me, I knew this was the right thing for me to practice what His Holiness has taught. I knew this is what I wanted for the rest of my life. I hope so much I can collect the people, resources and situations to bring these teachings and other teachings to thousands around the world in the near future. I might be throwing stones at the target in the dark because I am not qualified, but I have the passion to share what I know from my heart sincerely.
Please remember, all of us didn’t come across the dharma by accident, we created the causes. So let’s use this life to destroy as much attachments and it’s imprints as possible. Not to increase what is empty of real meaning. I fold my hands to the incomparable Tsongkapa, Dalai Lama, Pabongka, Trijang and Zong Lama beings. They appear as flesh and blood people, but in actual reality have gone to bliss aeons ago. May we never be far from Nagarjuna’s view and the presence of these great beings life after life until our own liberation.
With folded hands and tears streaming,
    Tsem Rinpoche

Dear all, every week I am informed of a death and to offer prayers. This week I was informed of four deaths. With death, everything is almost final and if we didn’t do dharma genuinely, we would have regrets. Death is such a omnipresent and frightening stalker. Realize it will come for you one day soon and go all the way with dharma, dharma practice, dharma work and gain realizations. At death, the dharma you have is the only hope. Anything else acquired in life is a total waste of time. Please realize and wake up. Don’t procrastinate and keep yourself ‘busy’ with activities that are empty at the time of death. Our minds will continue at death and what supports that journey is our good merits and attainments collected during our lives. Tsem Rinpoche

We have done Mama Mooi Lan’s funeral last night. She was 62 and passed of heart failure. Then we had to perform baby Tashi’s funeral a few hours later… Mama Mooi Lan was cremated this morning and baby Tashi was just cremated short while ago.. We did powerful pujas at the funeral home for Mama Mooi Lan and Baby Tash before cremationi. I am so proud our Kecharians went all the way to serve the persons that have passed away and their families without any sleep at all. Needless to say the families were so in shock and pain.We had to be there for them. I had to be there for them. I gave them dharma methods to collect further merits for their loved ones who have passed away. I was humbled and honoured to perform their funerals and do prayers for their posiitive rebirths. Imagine if I was real lucky and got to live solitary in a place like this??? Imagine if my cabin was near the shore of this lake without many people around? Imagine I have my dharma books and beautiful Buddha shrine and can live here away from the delusions, false dreams, fake promises and false hopes of this world that I never believed from day one anyways??? If I should be so lucky to be in such a living environment in this all future lives... Tsem Rinpoche

Dear Rinpoche, Bryan and I do so much less than what Rinpoche does. When people are asleep Rinpoche's working, when people are awake Rinpoche's working. Not many people in Kechara realize that Rinpoche works the hardest in the entire organization. I didn't know before joining Ladrang. Although Rinpoche may want to go around to pray for people in need, one day I want to able to do this instead of Rinpoche. It is quite taxing and Rinpoche can't be going out of Haven 24 hours to pray for the dying/dead. I'm happy Pastor Yek Yee and Pastor Susan wanted to come today, they really are awesome Pastors. Thank you, Jean Mei

Dear TR,  We have just collected Tashi's ashes. Our Nirvana agent who named May is a very nice lady, she is in her 40+, she is a Buddhist and a Mandarin speaker. She follow us thru out the whole session. May also bought us drinks and settle everything for us.  I have share with her about KH, TR and some other departments we have in Kechara. She is interested in KH. I will arrange with her to come and visit KH and various departments soon. The couple is sending us back home and we will go and get a stupa for Tashi's ashes. Have asked them to go back and rest after this. From Bryan

Dear Rinpoche, The casket has been filled with baby Tashi and baby items that Rinpoche bought for him. We did prayers before he left to be cremated. Thank you, Jean Mei (This morning at the funeral for baby Tashi, we bought baby items to be placed into his casket and cremated together. We wanted Tashi to have the baby items with him to let him know we care. His body is strewn with blessed rose petals. Tsem Rinpoche)

Dear all,  It's 9:30 AM. I just walked into the house after being in the hospital and then going to finish a funeral for a baby of a student. I have just conducted two funerals in the last 24 hours. The second funeral was for a baby. I had Jean Mei, Bryan, Seng Piow, Pastor Susan, Pastor Yekyee, Lew with me. Pastor Susan and Yekyee really wanted to come and learn. I am glad they made the effort.  We conducted a simple funeral by reciting holy verses, sprinkling holy water onto the baby, protector rice and scattered blessed fresh rose petals all over the baby. Afterwards I had a nice conversation about the baby's mind taking rebirth. Upon leaving the father and father's mother gave me a very warm hug of thanks and support during this most saddest of times for them...and the wife was happy and looked visibly relieved. She let go alot and let go of her guilt after we talked.. I have sent Bryan and Jean Mei with the family to cremate the baby this morning at 11AM It will take two hours and then we can bring the ashes home. Part of the ashes will be in a large stupa. All of us are extremely exhausted but did very good work. That is what Kechara is about. I am very happy we can help the baby and family along their way. When they called, they sounded extremely desperate as it was very late with no one to help them. We were very honoured to help them. I didn't call Pastor Yekyee and Pastor Susan heard, they immediately wanted to join me. Now with no sleep after baby Tashi's funeral, they went to Kechara to give dharma classes. I am proud of them and my assistants who wanted to help all last night until this morning. It is wonderful to give it all we can for others. That is what Kechara is about. Tsem Rinpoche

Dear TR,

I have received some update from Gaden regarding Justin Ripley's ashes.

Monastery have done a whole day of Vajrayogini Daju and Ruchok this Sunday, this is for Rinpoche's previous life and current life students who passed away recently: Geshe Ngawang and Justin Ripley.

Monastery is now in the middle making Tsa Tsa out from Geshe Ngawang's ashes. After they finish, monastery start to make Tsa Tsa out from Justin's ashes.

Monastery will use Justin's ashes and make a few different type of Tsa Tsa:

1) Chenrezig, Manjushri and Vajrapani Tsa Tsa

2) White Tara, Amitayus and Nagyalma Tsa Tsa

3) small stupa Tsa Tsa

I have asked monastery to mail us few Tsa Tsa after finish, this will be place inside KFR big VY stupa.

Thanks
Bryan (Justin Ripley's ashes has been made into holy Buddha tsatsas {as in picture} to gain more merits for him). We love Justin.

When we trust, practice and go all the way with the tantric path of Vajra Yogini, we have nothing to worry about. All the worries both worldly and spiritual will be solved. We should surrender to Vajra Yogini's blessing by being our best. We just set up this wonderful statue of Buddha Vajra Yogini in our library area. How beautiful She is. Buddha Vajra Yogini is special deity for those overwhelmed by laziness, miserliness and want easy practice but big results. May all of you be blessed to see Her holy image. Kechara Discovery Dept of our orgazination does such wonderful images available for the public. I am very happy as She is beautiful. Thank You Kechara Discovery! Tsem Rinpoche

When I first arrived in Malaysia in 1992 I had a group of people who would sponsor my tickets, stay and for many years sponsor much needed help in Gaden. One of them was Ms Mooi Lan who lives in Cheras. She has been a great supporter for the last 20 years and in the past sponsor. I recieved very sad news she passed away this morning at 4Am. I request all my students to please light a candle for her to take good rebirth and come across the dharma again. Offer the candle to Buddha Dukkar..that is the Buddha I assigned to her many years ago and she diligently practiced and set up a shrine to Dukkar.. I will miss her and never forget her kindness. Heruka! We say we want to improve yet we don't hold our vows. We promise to keep our samaya, yet our promise to our earlier promises laxed. We want to experience only good results yet we hold onto our face. We want wealth, yet we give nothing. We want success, yet we offer tiny offerings to the Three Jewels. We say we have great faith in our Guru, yet when his assignments are difficult we run. We say we want a good rebirth yet all our actions are motivated by self gain. Heruka, Heruka, Heruka, how are we to recieve your blessings when our three doors are closed tightly by selfishness, ignorance and anger?~Tsem Rinpoche

I haven't lived in Gaden since 1992 when I was sent to Malaysia. I love Gaden and loved so much living there. I like so many things about Gaden. Conversations would not be lonely and easy. Whatever I talk about the monks immediately understand. I do not have to face 'opposition' , doubts, hundreds of questions, and every detail simple about the dharma or dharma work has to be explained. I miss that so much. I am not lonely for company, but I am lonely for familiarity very much. I was very content, at peace and in my element in Gaden. I never knew or imagined I would have to go to Malaysia, stay and take on heavy responsibilities. I am not complaining but I love Gaden, the monks, my teachers, the great masters, the senior monks whom I have many friends. I miss them so much. So so much. I love and respect the great old monks, Rinpoches and spectacular Geshes. Gaden was a city of practitioners and I was home. Lord Tsongkapa's presence pervades the whole Gaden. TR

Dear all, I gave a talk on desire to a few inclusive of Paris and David. I asked David and Paris to write up the talk on their blogs. My plan was after they write it, I'll link it to my blog. From my blog people will click to their blog to read the write up and benefit many who read the talk. Paris did a very good write up and did not miss the subtle points I was expressing that night. She really took the time and effort to write it...I was happy to see she wrote exaclty as I expressed. Effort pays off usually or eventually. I am happy to see there are 669 views (43 comments) already going back to Paris' blog to read the teachings. The teachings will be benfit many. Must save and read again and again. Must share with others...Must contemplate. You want dharma, I am giving it to you and Paris wrote it out perfectly. Dear Rinpoche, Thanks Rinpoche so much for the new Samsung phone, battery and changer stand which Su Ming passed to me. Bryan gave me an incredible MOTHER'S DAY GIFT. It is so auspicious. He had someone draw HH Kyabje Zong Rinpoche's sacred face onto the body of Buddha Vajradharma. Buddha Vajradharma is the form Buddha takes to teach the immaculate and fautless tantra of Vajra Yogini. In Vajra Yogini's tantra and meditations, you must visualize your guru in the form of Vajradharma to make offerings both inner, outer & secret offerings daily to one's tantric guru & to meditate on Him in that form. It is very integral part of the practice. If you do the meditations well on your guru in this particular form during the practice of the sadhana..you can gain tremendous realizations and control over one's mind to leave the body when you want. So getting this picture today was an omen if Kecharians fulfill their responsibilities, then Vajra Yogini's practice will spread in this region. Very good omen. I feel this strongly. Bryan really planned out this gift & surprised me!! I will put in Chamang Ladrang in the future. THANK YOU BRYAN!!TR

Back in New Jersey over 30 years ago, there lived a lady down the street who was also a student of my teacher. Her name is Carmen (she is a nun now and her ordination name is: Ani Thupten). She had a nice size library of books and many dharma books. I loved the Dharma books!! I would spend so much time browsing and getting snippets of each book from Carmen. I use to ride by bike down to chat with her and borrow her books and it took me like 5 mins by bike..She lived on the same street. I would read dharma books voraciously and write down my questions. I would call Carmen almost daily for years to ask her to clarify the readings I had questions on. She would spend hours on a phone with me answering questions never once losing patience. I learned so much from her. She had vast dharma knowledge, very devoted to our teacher and would do her meditations and extensive sadhanas daily. She would join in all the dharma classes and pujas at our nearby Kalmuck Buddhist Temple. She was such a good dharma friend and I enjoyed her company very much. I wanted to be like her to have the freedom to study and practice dharma. When I recievd my first initiation by our teacher at the temple, Carmen sat right next to me on the front row. Thrilling!! After initiation we would have ten days of explanations (commentary) from our teacher His Eminence Kensur Losang Tharchin Rinpoche. I was so excited and deeply happy to get commentary from our great and knowledgable teacher. What I did not understand, I would of course consult Carmen who is much more advanced and taught me patiently after each day’s teachings. Around 15 years ago Carmen came to India and I travelled with her to holy Bodhgaya, Varanasi and Dharamsala. I escorted her to these places. Since then I have not met up with her. But I know she is fine. Around two years back I sent her a three foot Vajra Yogini statue as a gift from me. Carmen received the statue and was very happy. It was my offering to her for so much kindness shown me when I was a child. I wish so much she can visit Malaysia. She would be happy. We all want to be a part of something big and with good results. But the only way we can be a part of that is if we work hard together with the other members of our Kechara. The time will pass. It can pass with you taking on difficulties or it can pass with you doing nothing. I feel it's better to work hard now and enjoy later than to enjoy nothing now and then end up nowhere later. Prayers and dedications are ok, but hard work must be part of the prayer. Tsem Rinpoche

His Holiness the Dalai Lama seated here with His sacred mother. A mother who gives birth to great beings like Shakyamuni, Tsongkapa, Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, Trijang Rinpoche, etc must be a Buddha Herself, a highly realized Dakini, a powerful practitioner, or a lady who made prayers in previous lives to provide others with great dharma in one way or another. A lady of great spiritual merit or virtue.. I wanted to share this photo with you because if I ever met His Holiness' mother, I would prostrate to Her immediately. Beautiful picture. His Holiness is not ordinary for sure and neither could a being who gave birth to Him. Tibetans always said she was very saintly, gentle, simple and deeply spiritual. During Her lifetime many went to recieve Her blessings..Tsem Rinpoche

It's very revealing how when you give, offer and have something for them, they crowd around smiling, happy and easy. The minute you ask them to give something, contribute or really help out, they totally disappear. Handphones shut. No replies. No sound. As if you they never knew you. People like that make themselves 2nd rate, find 1st rate people to work with and move on. Recently I encountered some students like that!~ Tsem Rinpoche

Last night between 300-400 persons congregated at Kechara while I gave a talk to them on 'making a choice' and 'the power and purpose of stupas'. The talk has been taped and will be blogged once tape is ready. The talk was two hours and it flowed well for me although I had very little sleep. Towards the end of the talk I gave refuge vows to 100 new persons from different countries for this. When everything was done, I met up with a group of 15 and 5 from Shanghai. Had a nice dharma talk with them on how to make a centre grow and harmony. Passed out nice dharma gifts to all the visitors so they don't go home empty handed. Also seperately met some directors and movie producers that attended the talk and sought private time with me..these producers and directors are very well known locally. One is from Hong Hong. Got home around 5Am and saw so many gifts from people. Did a Manjushri dedication for all the people who offered gifts to me on Wesak day in gratitude. Also some people from Europe called in to Kechara to arrange flowers to be given to me last night. That was very sweet. I have so many flowers now..over 70 bouquets I would...guess. They have all been offered up on the shrine. Thank you. TR (May 5, 2012)

Karma exists and created constantly by our actions. Karma created in the past is fertile and will open up when the situation arises. We should never relax and think everything will be alright when there is so much volatile latent karma like a huge volcano temporarily dormant. We can do something about it though. If we always do not understand Dharma, then that is a sign of not studying. If we always blame Dharma, it is a sign we do not know what dharma really is. If we always expect of the Dharma, then we are using Dharma in ineffective methods. If we find Dharma difficult, then it is because we are unwilling to accept it. If we give up the Dharma, we are get deeper into our sufferings without respite. If we complain about Dharma it is a sign we are looking for blame in the wrong places and not within ourselves.~Tsem Rinpoche
