Playing Monopoly
Kb, Monlam and Seng Piow work very well together and help me alot in my daily affairs… They are very harmonious… I like them plenty… Alot of the things I can accomplish is because of them. They live with me and stay in the same house with me. When I travel, two of them will always accompany me. They are the guys behind the scenes that contribute tremendously and they are not interested in credits and limelight. Nice guys for sure.
I wanted Monlam to improve his English. So I decided to have them play Monopoly. Monopoly is a good way to bond and also learn English the fun way. You know Monopoly has those cards you got to read and give instructions..well I asked Seng Piow and Kb to help Monlam on this. It turned out to be hilarious. Good way for Monlam to read the card while having fun…
Seng Piow was very confident he’d win in the beginning having played Monoply many times before. Kb and Monlam never played…so they were learning as they went along. Monlam from the onset bought alot of property. Kb was careful. Seng Piow kept landing on Monlam’s property over and over and over till he had very little money left… hehehe… You’d hear Monlam asking Seng Piow to pay up and Seng Piow complaining not enough money!!
As the game progressed into the second hour, Seng Piow’s confidence was breaking. Seng Piow was saying to Monlam “Aiya, read the card better”…”Aiya, I taught you that word already and you forget” … hehehe. Then Seng Piow grabbed the card from Monlam at one point and said ” I can’t understand what you’re reading. Let me see!!” Kb was laughing away… Ever seen the cartoon Dastardly and Mutley? You Tube search it… Well Kb looked like Mutley in this scenario..
Very funny interaction. Guess who won in the end??? Monlam won to the consternation of Seng Piow and giggling Kb. Kb came in second… and Seng Piow last..
Funny… and entertaining. You have to watch these guys as I filmed them without them knowing at first.

Left to right: Kb, Seng Piow and Monlam

Monlam grabbing the card to read and notice Seng Piow intensely watching… hehe

Seng Piow grabbing the card and saying to Monlam “I don’t understand what you’re reading!!” Kb giggling on the side..of course there are external factors at work which is by this time Monlam the first time player is winning… hehehehe

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this little “play” episode of the 3 musketeers who have been taking care of Rinpoche and working very hard day and night with you all the time.
It is great to see them bonding so well during playtime.
I can see Monlam is enjoying this game obviously as he kept on smiling and turning towards you…..KB is cautious and absorbing all the rules of the game. Whereas Seng piow, the big brother is clearly over confident….
I think Monlam has “beginner’s luck” but I like the help of the “external force” here and let Monlam the first time player to win, hee hee……Seng Piow big brother’s ago was crushed as he was so confident he would win….:-)
Perhaps the hard working Ladrang Liaisons, Datuk May, JP, Su Ming and Beng Kooi should give this game a go, I am wondering which one the “external force” will help?? LOL
Haha… Beginner’s luck?
Watching them play monopoly made me feel like playing the boardgame myself lol! Been years since I played it
Awww…Seng Piow, how come you lost to Monlam Baby and KB? You have played so many times, as you claimed, and those two were to be your “water fish” but you ended up on the dinner table! Hahahaha!
Never underestimate one’s opponent. No matter how funny they look. Hehe
I love Monopoly! I used to play it a lot with my sisters and cousins. I still play it with Izabella. Now, Monopoly has evolved as well. They even have credit cards and the game becomes more sophisticated with its real estate.
Some of the other games we used to play as kids are Cluedo and Life.
I love games that is pure clean fun.
Shirley, I love Cluedo and other board games too, they are great bonding tools when you have friends around. Make our brains work rather than just our lips….
Oooo, monopoly!! haha love that game
Hehehe Must be beginnner’s luck for Monlam to beat a veteran Seng Piow in this game.
I have noticed before that sometimes, someone doing something for the first time does it very well. But that “first time” is hardly repeated, because every times after, the same thing is done with expectations (that are not at play the first time), and that spoils the “beginner’s luck”.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this “behind the scene” monopoly game.
I can totally relate to Seng Piow…
It is funny when you watched the video, i am laugh and laugh. So entertainment!
hahaha good one thierry!!
Monopoly was one of my favorite games, and i am quite surprised that monlam win! but what did make me laugh was reading the part where KB was too careful with his monopoly money…he really treated them as real money!! And of course that SP lost the game…must be a huge crush on his ego that he lost to 2 people who have only started playing monopoly as he had played it many times before. I wish i was there to see the dynamics tho…can only imagine the laughter and fun that they were having while playing monopoly. It is a really fun game to help people bond
Monopoly. Never has there been a truer test of selflessness and compassion!
Rinpoche has (and will) try every which way to improve the lives of his students, including teaching them to play Monopoly to practise their English, or Chinese checkers to develop their strategic planning skills! So if you think that a lama’s skilful means applies to ‘just’ Dharma teachings, well this post is a great example of how wrong you are
wow… is a long time game that i have not had my hands on for a very long time. My house mate children was playing them last month. Just like how Sp,Monlam and Kb are doing. The kids improve their english and at the same time you can see each and every of their character are different…
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us…
