THEN + NOW: can you recognize?

Feb 9, 2012 | Views: 1,127

Everyone was a kid once so see these interesting kiddie pics of the people who work closely with me….who can you recognize????

A few years back, when Kechara started to grow exponentially, I needed proper management from skilled and or dedicated individuals to get the organization to keep running smoothly. I decided to adopt the monastic organizational structure, as used in Gaden Monastery, to manage the expansion. In 2006, the Liaison Council was introduced into Kechara organization. 6 years later, Kechara now has 18 liaisons, all unique and capable individuals that carry out the necessary secular work for Kechara to continue benefiting others.

Kechara liaisons are very, very dedicated to their Dharma work… they work very hard to get things done, without any complaints or excuses. All 21 of them came into Kechara wanting to make a difference. They made the decision not to use their lives just to pursue a monthly pay cheque, but to instead benefit others… all through different means. I am very proud of Kechara’s 21 liaisons, and all the full-time staff and volunteers who support them.

I’ve blogged here the faces of the Liaisons then and now…everyone was a kid and they can grow up to be something beneficial to others…take a look..would you have recognized them as kids if I didn’t tell you who they were….Which one still looks similar to their kiddie pics and which ones really look different??? Let me know what you think? Who still resembles themselves as kids? Who do you think wins the cute kiddie pic??hehehe

  2. tenzin llhamo on Feb 9, 2012 at 12:40 pm

LOL…They all look so cute when they were young! Pastor Susan and Paul looks almost the same. The rest would have been a bit difficult to guess at first glance. The cutest in their kid photo would be Dato Ruby, Jean Ai and Su Ming.

  3. Thierry Janssens on Feb 9, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Funny how everyone looks similar, yet different.
Age takes a toll on physical appearances, but there is either a smile or a way in the eyes that makes the children recognizable.
It is like the personality is already there as a young child. Yes, the traits of character must come from before birth, how otherwise… how?

Pastor Ngeow with hair as a child has this air like he is about to talk about the 4 Noble Truths… I’ts funny to see!

Wow… JP’s outfit as a kid is priceless! Great style, and totally fit for playground… This is not in Malaysia right? Who wears pull-overs for playground activity in Malaysia…

Thank you for posting this Rinpoche

  4. lucy yap on Feb 9, 2012 at 12:47 pm

Very cute photos!Wan and Pastor Susan’s photos bear some resemblance.Su Ming and Datuk Ruby very, very cute! It’s amazing these young kids grew up to be wonderful adults who practice Dharma to benefit others.

  5. abby on Feb 9, 2012 at 3:11 pm

I think Wan and Datuk May still resemble themselves as kids. Especially the way Datuk May smiles, still remain the same.
Pastor Susan and Beng Kooi looks super cute and sweet!
Li Kim looks cheerful and graceful, hehehe.
And Im shocked that Pastor Yek Yee was a sporty girl! Pastor Ngeow looks cuter now. LOL.

  6. patsy on Feb 9, 2012 at 4:31 pm

Cute! Cute! They all look cute especially Jean Ai, Su Ming and Dato Ruby but the cutest is Beng Kooi.

Pastor Susan, Wan and Sharon still have the same resemblance.

Now all of them are grown up and doing dharma work to benefit others!.How wonderful!

Thank you for this post, Rinpoche!

  7. Su An on Feb 9, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Great article on the career history of these incredible people, showing how Kechara and Dharma was the turning point of their lives and how they are still going and growing strong with Kechara. The skills, knowledge and experienced gained before Kechara are effectively put to use to genuinely help others with no profit motive. They have made Kechara their “final career destination” and this speaks volumes. Congratulations!

  8. wahying on Feb 10, 2012 at 10:47 am

I think Irene, Yoke Fui(her smile), Wan, Pastor Susan (especially her eyes) and Jamie still resembles themselves as kids. And Pastor Ngeow and Dr Lanse look serious since young. Jean Ai and Su Ming cute, Dato Ruby such a little beauty, David was eating ice cream hehe. Thank you all liaisons for putting your lives in benefiting people.

  9. DR on Feb 10, 2012 at 12:01 pm

We were such cute babies and toddlers! Cute ‘pao paos’! And then we grew up and ………. Hahaha!

I think the cutest baby award goes to our dear Beng Kooi!

  10. Datuk May on Feb 10, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Looking at LiKim’s small girl photo made me remember what a small girl she was. Everything I bought for her to wear was special small size. Then she grew up……and then……..hahaha, she just grew!

  11. joey wong on Feb 10, 2012 at 1:59 pm

omg susan used to be cute, pretty and sweet before….

  12. henry ooi on Feb 10, 2012 at 3:22 pm

Beautiful and memories-filled pictures of yesteryear. Who else could have thought of such a posting than Rinpoche? Thank you, Rinpoche, for showing us how we looked like then.

Irene looks pretty in her pretty dress.
Su Ming was a pretty child and now a pretty woman.
Siong Woan looks pretty in her dress, wearing a hat.
Dato Ruby’s picture as a child is sweet. Now she is a swan.
Jean Ai – cute pic, her looks then resemble her now.

Datuk May’s pic of a child does not resemble her now. No, not at all.
Yoke Fui on a bicycle? Her face shape did not change much.

Pastor Yek Yee on the podium receiving trophy for 3rd placing? What happened?
Sharon is cute with a hat (by the beach, I think). Her smile as a child is still there today.
Li Kim in shorts, sporty. Not surprised. Look at her now.
JP – sporty on trampoline? Where did that JP go to?

Wan’s pic as a child resembles her current pic.
Pastor Susan’s pic as a child resembles her now especially her mouth part, err, teeth.

Paul’s pic in classroom is studious, no wonder.
    Han is school uniform, studious.
Dr Lanse, did not look too happy, maybe forced by parents to become a doctor? All she wanted was to be free to find herself.

Nicholas as a Western cowboy? Maybe previous life?
Pastor Ngeow in cowboy outfit too? Fierce and pissed off look. Maybe parents forced him to be something else but he wants to be a pastor?

Jamie in dress, cheeky look, still is.
Beng Kooi, even as a child she still was not in a dress.
David – could not see his lips so cannot tell the resemblance.

Seng Piow’s skin colour is quite dark even as a child.

I pick pastor Susan’s pic as the closest resemblance.

I find Beng Kooi’s pic as the cutest because then and now are sooooo different.

  13. mayy on Feb 10, 2012 at 4:04 pm

Hehehe….most of them looks different in their own ways. As one matured over the years few of the liaisons featured looks so different. Few till todate does look almost the same.

I like Jamie’s way of smiling which still resembles her till now…haha.

Beng Kooi looks soooooooo different from her young age photo!

Dato Ruby, Jean Ai and Su Ming …so cute! :)

Most recognisable were Pastor Susan, Pastor Yek Yee, Wan, Sharon, Irene and Datuk May.

  14. Sharon Saw on Feb 10, 2012 at 6:44 pm

Gosh… aren’t these photos the perfect reminder for impermanence! :D Thank you for sharing these photos… i must say it’s been an amazing experience to work with all the liaisons – everyone comes from such vastly different backgrounds yet we are all united in the common pursuit of spiritual progress and to bring Tsem Rinpoche’s vision to fruition! Somehow our karma brings us here so we shall have to work hard to make sure our collective karma doesn’t exhaust… as Rinpoche said today: “Though we may have the collective karma to get something, physically if we do nothing much and watch our lives waste by comfortably, then the open window could close on us. Nothing is static. Nothing stays, so we have to always be ‘aggressive’, consistent and pro-active.”

  15. Irene on Feb 10, 2012 at 10:31 pm

“Birds of the same feather flock together” – whatever size, shape, colour, appearance and background we came together for one vision, one reason, one guru to make 1 Kechara grow and be beneficial to others. We must have made our prayers in our previous lives for this to happen and meet with 1 perfect Guru to make our lives meaningful. Thank you my dear Rinpoche.

  16. pastor on Feb 11, 2012 at 11:13 am

Henry no wonder people call us old cows, we were cowboys! Now i know why u smoke, you like guns ! No wonder u don’t need to look fierce. Now u do because u lost yr guns hehe !

These are excellent information and writeup about the various people who are heading Kechara what they have done before as RInpoche said many times before, many hands and many people with all kinds of skills and experiences combined can make things happen. And we do need many people to come together to build a lasting legacy like KWPC.

I love watching this video about Dharma work that was recorded by Rinpoche a few years ago. I have watched it a few times already and constantly go back to this blog post to watch it again every now and then… it helps me a lot to keep my motivation for Dharma in place. Perhaps it’s time for you to listen to this Dharma talk again! Here’s the link =) http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/me/dharma-work-attitude-tdl.html

Went out with a group of my writers tonight. We had gone to Petaling Street to purchase a lot of offering items for Manjushri…afterwards…. Had a nice meal at a restaurant specializing in China’s Dongbey province. The place is simple and not pricy but the food is mouth watering and superb. The 8 of us gulped down the food and boy was it satisfying. You can’t imagine. Then we adjourned to Delicious to have some coffee/tea/lychee tea and cakes and lively conversation and pick games. Had a good time spending time with wonderful people some of which I have known for years. Now doing sadhana and sleep soon. Tsem Rinpoche

For Ashlee – Dear Ashlee, I am happy to hear about your wish to help the animals. Each day of us not eating meat for the duration of our lifetime will accumulate into hundreds if not thousands of lives saved. I do need a lot of help with KAS and thank you very much for helping. When i first came to kechara, Alex was the first few people who shared his knowledge with me and I appreciate you both very much. With the blessings of Rinpoche, let us continue our journey together to manifest a safe haven for the animals as well as play an influential role to instill a caring nature in our community.

. “So, every time, every day, whenever one complete’s one advice of guru, every time you become closer to enlightenment. Every time, every day, one advice get’s done, you become closer to enlightenment and it becomes great purification for many lifetimes, those heavy negative karma get purified. Inconceivable merits get collected.” Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Whenever we let anger control our actions, it’s a clear indication selfish mind is predominant.~Tsem Rinpoche Being selfish is the core of many of our emotional upheavals and unhappiness.~Tsem Rinpoche Please stop being held back by anger & fear, step into the light. Being one of the closer student around Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, i do experience a lot of miracles, from someone who are very sick got heal or rain stop at certain moment that is urgent, some may think it’s all coincidence, let me tell you a real truth story that happened an hour ago. H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, like to rescue animals such as fishes, dogs, birds and etc. In our new Kechara Forest Retreat land, Rinpoche have kindly requested one of the liaison Beng Kooi to build a fish pond for all the fishes that Rinpoche rescued. The contractors that we got in to build the fish pond was slow and delay a few deadline that they gave. Just 2 days ago, Rinpoche instructed the fish pond project to be call off and all workers should leave the fish pond site as soon as possible. While we still thinking why Rinpoche cancel this project as it’s one of Rinpoche wishes to build a very comfortable place for fishes. Something happened an hour ago, there was a big bang came from the fish pond site, the whole artificial waterfall wall collapse without people go near it. This artificial waterfall wall was made out of cement, wire mesh, metal bar and etc, it weigh easily 200-300 Kgs. Luckily Rinpoche have giving us warming do not go near this waterfall 2 days ago, and should stop all construction wall, just imagine the workers are still working when the waterfall fall, some people might died or serious injury now. Due to humility Rinpoche will not say a word or show his premonitions power, this happened many many times. Rinpoche just save a few life without them knowing it. A lot of people will think why such horrible thing can happened in a holy land like Kechara Forest Retreat, a Buddhist site should always safe from all accident, but we believe if a place that will be use to benefiting thousands, a lot of obstacles will appear, I will take this artificial waterfall accident as part of clearing our negative karma, may all the negative karma from all of us be cleared. It’s glad that this happened before we move any fishes into this pond. In Tibetan culture, it’s an auspicious omen which represent bad obstacles have been cleared, and all our project will grow very smoothly later. It’s very important we follow our lama’s instruction/advice, even though sometime we might not understand it truly, because a real lama will never do anything which is not beneficial.

For tsemtulku – My dear Rinpoche,Alex & I met you 10 years ago. Because of your precious Dharma teachings & guidance, we are able to transform ourselves. Because of your Dharma vision, we now have 14 Departments for people with different skills & interest to be involve and for us to create merits in virtuous activities. I have been a part time vegetarian for sometime. Somehow i just wasn’t able to be a full vegetarian. After watching your teaching on “Integrity, Keeping promises & Vows”, it finally hit me. It is so true that having vows are not meant to “Imprison” us but really to help us transform positively to kick away our negative habits. I realize that from young, we have been condition to think that we have to eat meat and meat is delicious and it is part of life to consume meat in our daily diet. Hence we ignore the sufferings of others in order to indulge in our own taste buds. Lately, i have develop myself into feeding strays nearby my neighbourhood and I’m compelled to help strays via Kechara Animal Sanctuary. After deep contemplation, i realize that i cannot be wanting to help KAS and yet still eating meat. The equation is just so wrong. Now i can see clearly, it makes it so much easier to be a full vegetarian. Taking the vegetarian vow is not an imprisonment but it is another level of commitment to not be the source of pain to other sentient beings. It is a choice that we make to kick away our preconception of consuming meat for a balance diet.If one is against animal cruelty, then one should practice vegetarianism. Can’t be pitching for animal rights when you are still eating them. My daughter once said to me, “Mommy, animals are our friends so we shouldn’t be eating them”. I find that so profound coming from a kid. I’m very sure my family members will not be supportive of me going vegetarian but I pray that one day they will also come to the same realization as i have.
I humbly offer to Rinpoche my vegetarian vow and may it be dedicated to Rinpoche’s long life. May it also be dedicated to my family, loved ones and friends.
I will continue to get involve in KAS activities to assist Pastor Susan.
    Thank you my dear Lama.

Most amusing is this unparalleled ingenuity of the highly inspired dramatic slogan (self-explanatory) in the cover picture of http://www.facebook.com/MBFSG?fref=ts which HHDL and all Buddhas of the past, Buddhas of the present and Buddhas yet tocome, correspondingly are bowing their heads in deferential obeisance. Are we now transported to the Age of Somnambulism??? To earthlings, the most crucial life sustaining factor is NO AIR, NO LIFE, in so far as planet Earth and basic common sense are concerned.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Kyabje Chatral Rinpoche: "I am just an ordinary sentient being and there is nothing special about me. I just follow the teachings of Lord Buddha. Without any cheating on my part, I stand firmly on the ground in practicing the Dharma and in helping all sentient beings. I wish that all sentient beings could let go of the acts of self-deception and self-aggrandizement, so that they can really practice the Dharma in order to liberate themselves from cyclic existence and to help other sentient beings. Otherwise, it will be too late when they are feeling remorseful!"

We should have compassion for butchers. When we stop eating meat, we don’t make create the causes for them to slaughter animals contributing to their killing karma. We may say it’s ok to eat meat, but someone has to do the killing and collect the negative karma. Go vegetarian. It’s good for the butchers, the animals and ourselves.~Tsem Rinpoche

Kechara Liaisons are leaders who head and run our 13 depts within Kechara. Liaison Paul heads the arts, statue making, florist and Gompa depts. Yes he has huge portfolios. And he does a good job! Paul took a group of people to Kechara Forest Retreat today with Pastor Yek Yee to introduce to them about our projects. Paul tirelessly/kindly talks to many people this way. It's people like Paul who contributes to Kechara reaching out to many and benefitting them. When we do dharma and not see it as work, it's never a burden. We should see it as a way for ourselves to grow and creating the space for others to grow also. Kind people like Paul inspire me. Thank you Paul. Tsem Rinpoche

I offer my prayers to the Three Jewels for Andrew and all the people who will be benefitted by the presence of this sacred outdoor Buddha for the public! Humbly, Tsem Rinpoche

Dear all, This is Paris interviewing my sister Lidshma. She mentions when I was very young the monks would have me sit with them to do the Buddhist services which was highly irregular in New Jersey. They didn't have lay people even children sit with them to do the services. So she mentions this was very unusual in a good way. My sister Lidshma here mentions my mother (Dana) would always catch me in the night in my room in the dark sitting on my bed meditating and doing mantras. I did that always and had to avoid being caught by my mother. I did it nightly. So I did it secretly and without her catching me. If she did catch me, then there would be big drama and problems depending on the mood my mom was in. My practicing dharma/meditating/praying/mantras was not allowed at all by my parents. They were fiercely against it always. My sister remembers this here. My sister lives in Texas, USA. And our bio group had gone to USA to interview my family for my bio book. This is a snippet.
