Ghosts in the Pub

A student of mine, Shirley Tan, sent me this video below. It’s a video that shows a ghost causing a bit of mischief… the footage shows a pint glass mysteriously moving off the table. It was captured on CCTV at the New Inn in Gloucester, which has a reputation for hauntings.
People’s reaction to ghost stories are always the same: some are fascinated, some are scared, some may make fun of their existence… and some don’t believe in them at all! Regardless of people’s reactions, from time to time… here and there… unexplainable ghostly happenings do occur.
When we hear about ghosts or if we do happen to encounter one, we have to remember that it is not fun or fascinating to be a ghost. Ghosts suffer tremendously within the spirit realm. Anyone can be re-born as one, if you have created the causes for it to happen. It is not fun to be a lonely ghost seeking attention from the living or to suffer from constant thirst and hunger for hundreds of years. The main causes to take rebirth as a ghost is attachment to a place, idea, event, sorrow or item. Also miserliness. Ghosts can live for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. They have different personalities/powers just like any other sentient being in the Universe.

A catalogue of unexplained activity at a Gloucester pub has prompted the Gloucester Active Paranormal Society to investigate.
A series of unexplained happenings have occurred at The New Inn in the space of a week (in May 2010), including the sound of ghostly footsteps, rattling doors and even a pint of beer mysteriously lifting itself off a table and on to the floor.
The building in Northgate Street is a bar and hotel, and dates back to the 14th Century. It was originally built to house pilgrims visiting the shrine of King Edward II at nearby Gloucester Cathedral, and is described as having the finest example of a medieval gallery in Britain.
Lyn Cinderey from the Gloucester Active Paranormal Society (GAPS) was in the bar at the time of the ‘moving pint’ incident, taking part in a pub quiz.
“The quiz night was absolutely amazing,” she said.
“There were a few people in the bar, and four people saw this glass – a full pint – just lift up and fall on the floor. The glass didn’t even break.
“The rest of us looked around and heard the thud. We just couldn’t believe it. It was right there in the middle of the quiz.
“I’ve been investigating this [reputedly haunted] building for a long time and I’ve never known it so active.
“Activity has risen since 1 February when new managers, Mark and Samantha, arrived. Their daughter has been talking to a young girl – there is reputedly a young spirit girl there.”
Lyn claims other strange happenings have happened recently.
“One of the bar staff has heard footsteps in the cellar when he’s been clearing up with nobody else there, and staff have also heard the exit door rattle in the restaurant.
“Another of the bar staff claims that when he’s been clearing up he’s felt a cold spot and he’s been chilled all over. It’s absolutely fantastic,” said Lyn.
On another occasion the pub managers’ pet has even been spooked.
“Samantha’s dog was eating his food in his bowl the other night and the bowl just turned itself over.
“The dog ran over to the other side of the room and just stared at his bowl and wouldn’t go near it the rest of the night.
“My friend also stayed there and she was watching TV when it suddenly went off.
“She went to look and the plug was half way out of the socket and yet it was firmly in before.”
There have also been reports of keys going missing.
Lyn Cinderey is now planning to do an overnight investigation, with a team of people from GAPS.
They will carry out temperature readings, use dictaphones to do EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recordings, record anything that might be there with camcorders, and take pictures.
“We’ll hopefully get to the bottom of what exactly is going on,” said Lyn.

In general, there has been a fair amount of ghost footage taken in different pubs around the world. This seems to be a frequent phenomena and any ghostly phenomenon that the CCTV captures as well as the witness accounts are very convincing. Here’s one about a ghost caught on CCTV in Cumbria, UK (http://www.ghosttheory.com/2010/09/14/cctv-video-ghost-in-pub). And apart from the videos sent by Shirley, I have added more videos below… one of them is a 5-part video of a group of people investigating the existence of a ghost residing in a pub…
This is a video of a pub owner who recognizes how her pub has a resident ghost…

I think Spirits are real and that they manifest a lot of activity as they are seeking attention. It is definitely no fun being a spirit because the Buddha identified it is a lower rebirth. It is lower state of existence because the suffering in the spirit realm is a lot more when compared to the human realm. Hence, they seek a lot of attention and I guess require even more acknowledgement of their existence simply because they suffer a lot more loneliness and attachment.
Like people, spirits have various personalities and some are actually benevolent while others are harmful or mischievous. Whatever personalities they possess, one cannot deny their existence because too many cultures and people have too much proof and evidence of their existence.
Thank you for sharing that perspective Rinpoche. It does help tremendously to contemplate their sufferings – it transforms our fear into compassion, so we practise harder and do something to help these beings instead of just being scared of them, or try to destroy them. I guess this goes for anybody we are “scared” of or have difficulty with.
Some of the Thai horror movies show this aspect very well (e.g. Unborn or Shutter or Dark Waters) where you eventually find out how much suffering the spirit goes through. The fear instantly goes when you find out, and you feel so much sadness for them instead.
We do have a lot to do to help everyone!
What kind of body does a ghost have? How can it interact with material phenomena?
I remember visiting Wat Muang in Thailand with Rinpoche whereby there have a hell garden in which Rinpoche said if only we can see how they suffer as all the realm which spoken by Buddha do exist.
10 second in hell realm will blow our mind and make us never be bad person again. Many of the spirit due to attachment, stayed at that area for hundreds and thousands year, sad or angry but basically suffer and no happiness.
We have to be compassionate to ourselves by letting go and stop eating meat. Imagine we take rebirth in the hell, spirit realm…
