Living Body of Hambo Lama Itygelov

Stay pure living in this muddy sea in this dangerous and murky time….
The richness that was gained and kept madly will lose its value and will turn into
the special poison….
Having studied the material life dispassionately, begin to practice
“The Ten Good Deeds” today, without delay”
- Hambo-Lama Ityghelov

In the 20s Hambo-Lama Ityghelov warned his countrymates that very soon they would face hard times: the temples would be destroyed, and cattle would be kept in them, lamas and believers would be prosecuted, arrested, imprisoned and killed.

“But they will not be able to catch me” – said Lama. (Notes: socialistic revolution started in Russia in 1917 and red terror spread throughout the country and reached Buryat area by 1922-23)

On the 15th of June 1927 Ityghelov declared to the  disciples about his decision to leave this world and ordered them to exhume his body out of the ground in 30 years and examine it. Then he asked them to start chanting a prayer “good wish to the dead” and then taking a lotus-pose had started to meditate. The disciples didn’t dare to chant the prayer to the alive teacher, and seeing them hesitating Lama started to chant it himself. The disciples had joined the chanting and continued it. After a couple of days, having made sure that the Teacher showed no signs of life, they buried him in the community’s cemetery as he ordered.

Soon, after Ityghelov had left, the mass communistic robbering of datsans started along with mass arrests of lamas and believers. Lamas and believers hid the relics, but most of the relics were destroyed or robbed by bolsheviks. In Aninsky datsan (the main datsan of Buryatia, where Lama Ityghelov spent for 20 years) the central Temple were exploded, later in its ruins the cattle slaughter-house was arranged!

In 1944 Stalin gave a permission for temples restorations and Ivolghinsky datsan was the first to be restored on that place. It became the residence of Buryatian Buddhists; believers brought there the saved books, papers and relics there.

According to the order of Lama Ityghelov, in 1955, secretly, lama XVII Pandido Hambo-Lama Darmaev accompanied by other lamas exhumed the sarcophagus with the Ityghelov’s body. After making sure that the body was in good condition, they had dressed it in new garments, put it into the wooden sarcophagus, filled with salt and put it back into the ground.

In 1973  Pandido Hambo-Lama Gomboev with other lamas had repeated the same procedure: they checked the body’s state, renewed the dressing and put it back into the ground.

On 10.09.2002 XXIV Pandido Hambo Lama Damba Ayushev with other lamas have exhumed sarcophagus and after having done special rituals moved it into Ivolghin Datsan. It took about 2-3 years to take this decision after in 2000 one lama had seen Ityghelov in the meditation, and Ityghelov asked  to exhumed his body.

After the body was exhumed, it was kept under the examination and control of the best Russian experts and morbid anatomists of the leading Russian institutions. There are lots of amazing and striking comments and analysis results of different experts, who agree in one: the body of Ityghelov looks as if he died 12 hours ago: the skin is elastic, veins are movable, but only the blood became like jelly.  Some of them said that touching the lama’s hands they felt that they were warmer that their own hands.

Samples of Lama’s hair (that fell from his head), some scrubbed skin particles and tiny piece of his nail were sent to Moscow for the DNA examination. After the comparison with the samples of the alive people, the stunning conclusion was made: the albumen did not change its structure, i.e. it didn’t differ from the one of the alives!

To make sure that the body was not polished or elaborated with some conserving substances (kind of mummifying), the chemical analysis were provided. The body was compared with the samples of mummies found during the archeological survey of Manezh. It has been revealed that there are no additional substances  in the Ityghelov’s body.

The imperishable body of Lama Ityghelov, sitting in the lotus-pose, now is placed in Ivolghinsky Datsan, it is treated carefully and the believers are permitted to see him.

Ivolghinsky Datsan

Ivolghinsky Datsan

Leaving the body by his own desire during the deep meditation is known not only in Buddhizm (Like Buddha had implemented “parinirvana”), but also in Hinduism (mahasamadhi) and some other ancient religions.

Comment of Dalai-Lama: “Real lama is capable to leave his body during the deep meditation. The meditation may last for years and years. The example is the northern Buryatian lama who is still staying in the deep meditation for many years”.

It is interesting that Buddha Shakyamuni himself used to mention that his study will have its second breath in the very north of its area (which is actually Buryatia, the Northest Buddhists nation). The fact that in Buryatia (in Eghituisk Datsan) they keep the rarest Buddha’s lifetime statue aged up to 2500 years   supports this idea.

Buddhism

Buddhism came to Zabaikalie in the form of lamaism from Mongolia and Tibet in the middle of the 17th century when 100 Mongolian and 50 Tibetan monks settled here. Their active campaign to introduce the new religion to the shamanists was supported by the Buryat aristocracy and Tsar Administration. In 1741 Buddhism was recognized as one of the national religions of Russia. The Gelukpa school was the most common, its founder being Tsonkhava, the reformer of Tibetan Buddhism.

By the end of the 19th century several of the world’s ancient sacred objects delivered from Tibet and India were kept in Buryatia. Among them there was a huge metal statue of Buddha Maidari, Sandal Buddha statue, canonic book “Ganzhur” of 113 volumes and Danzhur of 300 volumes. They contained encyclopedic manuscript of medieval Buddhist teachings in philosophy, medicine, logics, linguistics, astrology and other fields of knowledge. There were also unique medical «Chzhud Schi” and «Vaidurya-onbo», and the only full copy of “Atlas of Tibetan Medicine” of the two preserved in the world. Today the copy of the Atlas is restored and translated into Russian language and stored in the Museum of History of Buryatia.

Buddhists temples became universities where Tibetan, Mongolian languages, Sanskrit, “Five Big Sciences”(religious philosophy, Grammar, Tibetan and Mongolian medicine, technology of arts and craft) and “Five Small Sciences” (poetry, stylistics, metrics, dances and music, astrology) were studied. Buddhist temples used secret rituals, Tsam mystery being one of them.

There were highly educated people among Buddhist clergy. Agvan Dorzhiev, the teacher of Dalai Lama XIII was one of them. With his initiative in 1915, the first Buddhist temple in Europe was built in Saint Petersburg. Brothers Badmaev’s successful medical practice of Tibetan medicine was highly appraised by Russian emperor Alexander the Third. Thanks to their activity and to Agvan Dorzhiev, Tibetan medicine spread in Russia. In 40’s-80’s years of the last century a graduate of Buddhist medical school of Atsagat Buddhist temple Galdan Lenkhoboev contributed greatly to the preservation and development of Tibetan medicine. Today, Tibetan medicine is developing with the government support.

Buddhist clergy is actively working towards Buddhism revival. Old Buddhist temples are being restored, the new ones are being built, Buddhist stupas, symbolic models of the Universe, are being set up in many places all over the region. The Buddhist traditional Sangkha of Russia is a member of the World Brotherhood of Buddhists with the centre of Russian Buddhists located in Buryatia. There is one of Sangkha’s institutions of higher education – Buddhist Institute “Dashi-Choinkhorlin” where young people from many regions of Russia come to study. In 1979, the Head of Buddhists of the world – His Holiness Dalai Lama XIV visited Buryatia.Buddhism is one of the most interesting pages in the history of Buryatia that attracts growing attention. Tourists can visit Buddhist temples, go on tours, consult Tibetan emchi lamas (monks practicing oriental medicine), monks astrologists, buy medicine and religious things and order prayers.

Lama Itygelov

The name of Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itygelov is known to every Buddhist in the world. There hasn’t been a scientific explanation found to explain his phenomenon yet.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Lama Itygelov was a Khambo Lama, head of Buddhists of Russia. In 1927, being a high rank jogine, he reached the state of Nirvana. Then he was placed into a wooden sarcophagus and buried seating in meditation. The burial place was kept secret by lamas. In 2002, he was taken out of the ground, in accordance with his will, and placed in the Ivolginsky Buddhist temple.

The event caused sensation in the world. Many studies made for the last several years by famous scientists and research institutes of Russia have shown that the physical characteristics of the body and the brain of lama Itygelov are similar to that of a living body. The Lama is still sitting in mediation posture, his body being warm and soft. He perspires but doesn’t lose weight. He doesn’t need any support and it seems that he gets charged from some energy sources. Scientists believe that the body is in the state unknown to science.

Buddhists believe that in the Itygelov’s body there is Buddha’s spirit and the lama is alive. Buddhists have several versions of Itygelov’s phenomenon.

Lama Itygelov’s body has been enshrined in the middle of the prayer hall for people to come and worship

Dalai Lama the XIV expressed his opinion that Itygelov had gone into a deep meditation but his finest form of consciousness “namshi” is still present in his body. Bogdo Gegen Khalkha Dzhetsun Damba Rimpoche thinks that Itygelov managed to reach the state of imperishable body, as a result of tantric practice, and having left it stopped the reincarnation circle and his consciousness left for the highest spheres. Ganzhur lama Radnaev, vice principle of the Buddhist Institute “Dashi-Cjoinkhorlin”, said that Itygelov’s consciousness might be in the constant movement and keeps contact with his body.

Great number of people from different countries makes pilgrimage to the body and spirit of Lama. People believe that touching his hand or clothes makes wonders and may change life for the better and protect from troubles. A temple designed by Itygelov himself was built to have better access to the body.

In 2005 a manuscript written by Itygelov was found where he forecasted his arrival and revival of Buddhism. His last foretelling has come true.

In the burial place, Khukhe-Zurkhen, a Buddhist stupa has been constructed. In Ulan-Ude there is the Institute of Khambo Lama Itygelov, whose activity is aimed at studying the phenomenon of imperishable body and determining the importance of the event for the world’s history and Buddhist teaching.

It’s amazing how the body is still alive after all these years. I’m surprised why there is no extensive media coverage on this phenomenon. Nevertheless, I believe that there are many things out there that can happen or exist of which we are ignorant.

This article will blow the minds of all skeptics. I would like to visit this temple one of these days and bring all my skeptic friends. hehe.

Thank you Rinpoche for showing us the endless possibilities out there.

    Love,
    JP

    So mystical & amazing …

  3. Ethan Chu on Jun 12, 2011 at 3:26 pm

Wow! This is amazing!!! Lama Itygelov has proven that with deep practice and meditation and high tantric is able to achieve that. It of course requires a lot of practice, unbroken samaya & vows, guru devotion and dedication. Wonderful!

    Dear Rinpoche ,

Thank you for thid amazing story about this great lama. Didnt even know such place even existed ! I do wonder why this lama manifest such ability ? is it to “convince” his follower ?

actually this is not the 1st time i saw this , in some documentary film i saw sometime back there is another monk from thailand manifested the same ability as well. But that monk wasnt as long as this Lama , but it is still amazing why their body wont decay.

They must have done some very powerful practice and meditation to enable them to do something like of this nature. Some really high attained lama and monks really can perform supernatural feats.

    Thanks again !!!

Most may not have the merits to see buddha’s , but thank goodness we still have the merits to see the results of the practice of these high lama’s. Many people with lack of merits may still put doubt , even though they are hardly scientists themselves.. May many more lamas manifests these miracles so that they may put to rest any further doubts .. There is a whole other world that we have yet to explore. We need to look beyond the illusion we have created for ourselves. There is a better place to be. And when we get there , we can show everyone else how to get there. I rejoice in the eternal bliss that Lama Itygelov is residing in now.

  6. Margaretlee on Jun 12, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Buddhism is really a living religion.

I believe even scientists are scratching their heads to understand how this state of body is possible. But highly attained lamas demonstrated what to do and how to achieve it to the rest of world, budhhism is never just a legendary story, it is a living proof of science and religion.

A corpse of lama Itygelov who had gained complete realizations remained mysteriously alive-looking 30 years later after being exhumed, he specifically asked his students to exhume his body for a reason, to show to the world that when we really engage in higher tantric practice and meditation, and with pure guru devotion and holding all the vows, enlightenment is achievable.

I am hoping one day I will have the greaat fortune to visit Ivolghinsky Datsan.

This is so amazing! Even scientist can’t explain this extra ordinary phenomenon. The understanding of mind in Buddhism is far more advance than science

  9. Gim Lee on Jun 13, 2011 at 3:31 am

Thank you Rinpoche for posting this blog. This will definitely benefits people who are not so convince of Lamas’ ability to control their own death and performing miracles… this is really amazing as it is confirmed by independent party, the Russian scientists.

But doesn’t salt serve as a ocnservative? A kind of salt (natron) was used as a conservative for Egyptian mummies too. The colour of the skin makes me believe that the conservation of the body is a result of the use of salt during the burial.

Thank you, Rinpoche, for this amazing account(with the hard evidence of pictures) of a great Master who has manifested an imperishable body, so that the Dharma will remain alive in this degenerate age.

The fact that Lama Itgelov was able to declare ahead of time that his body was to be exhumed thirty years from its being placed in a sarcophagus for burial, showed that this Holy Being, out of great compassion, was going to manifest miraculous and wondrous things for the benefit of all beings.

Thus, when his body was exhumed thirty years later and found to be intact, as though he had died only twelve hours before, he was already showing that he was using his body to send home the Truth in a tangible form, of what lord Buddha taught over 2500 years ago. The Mind is the creator of all our experiences and the forms we will take in all rebirths. The state of mind of ultimate inner peace that we can cultivate (Lama Itygelov shows us), can also determine that we can control our death and rebirth and eventually get out of samsara and suffering.

Being the Bodhisattva that he is, he allows access of his body to people of simple minds and simple faith, who believe that touching his body will change their lives for the better and bless them to overcome the obstacles of their daily life.

I prostrate in body, speech and mind to this great and kind Lama.

  12. Frederick Law on Jun 13, 2011 at 12:37 pm

this is certainly an amazing story and discovery. i think the lesson in this story is that, in this degenerate time, when people start to drift away from religion, and started to get close with Dharma and Guru, or to heed the advice, due to the ego, and samsara world that blinded us to see clearly what is coming, because of this many High Lamas and Guru manifest sickness and even death on them self to show us what is about to happen, and it is this compassion that many miracles and extraordinary things happen, to show us that sometimes through religion and Guru advice which can turn our life around if we believe in religion and the Guru. this is just my humble opinion, i maybe wrong. :)

  13. Jace Chong on Jun 13, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this amazing true story.

Our perceptions towards things happened in the world are rather shallow, there’s a lot of amazing thing out there which even the scientist can’t explain. Never say never, there are still lots of possibilities for human to explore.

I read a Chinese article about a matching of science theories with ancient Buddhist teachings, it’s very interesting that there’s nothing to prove a single thing from what Buddha said is wrong, and it’s getting more and more similarity between Buddhism and latest science development.

I believe there are more “miracles” coming, stay tuned everyone!!

  14. David Lai on Jun 13, 2011 at 6:03 pm

What an attained Lama! Well, all Lamas are amazing for being upholders of the Dharma. This Lama is amazing for displaying Tantric power after his passing and in that way, he upholds the Dharma. I believe, such abilities are not unusual in Tibet and Mongolia of old. Tantra has particular power to bestow such supernatural abilities. His holy remains and scientific investigation will serve to give credibility to Tantric meditation and practice for today’s people. Having faith in Tantra, Lama and Dharma will ease many people along their spiritual journeys.

    Dear Rinpoche,
Thanks for this wonderful posting on highly attained Lama. Woul like to share something interesting that slightly relates to this post.

A few years back, a documentary was shown on Discovery Channel reg. Mumified Shingon Monk of Japan (Rev. KuuKai) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu)

  17. Sharon Saw on Jun 14, 2011 at 1:25 am

This amazing phenomenon is inexplicable by science which means that it is NOT the salt that is preserving the body of this Lama. The fact is that the body is still warm and is sitting upright without support, which is not caused by any amount of salt. The only logical explanation is that this is proof of the Lama’s attainments, and is something that is not unusual in high Lamas.

Thank you for sharing. I hope this true story will make people sit up and open up their minds to possibilities beyond our limited perceptions.

  18. Datuk May on Jun 14, 2011 at 1:26 pm

The Buddhas never give up. Buddhas will use all ways to show us the Ultimate Truth, with the Dharma, manifestations of great Lamas who will untiringly teach us. Yet because of our ignorance, laziness and ego we do not listen as we think of self absorbing pleasures and comforts.

We, sentient beings truly are losers, not to live in the Dharma and make purposeful use of this precious human life.

Thank you, Lama Itygelov for teaching us even in death. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this with us.

Thanks Rinpoche, i had been curious about the Buddhism in the European Region, realised that theres Buddhism developing and progressing there from the Boryuts? Georgia of Kalmykia is added into my must visit country in the near future.Once i even came across a temple website in moscow with webcam in the main shrine ! Ha Ha!

  20. Uncle Eddie on Jun 14, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Just before Lama Itygelov left this world for nirvana, he asked his disciples to start chanting a prayer “good wish to the dead”. After taking a lotus-pose and seeing that the disciples daren’t chant to a still alive teacher, he himself started to chant it himself. Then only the disciples joined in for a couple of days chanting until the teacher has passed out. Leaving the body by his own desire during deep meditation is said be a known fact not only in Buddhism (like our Lord Buddha had implemented “Parinirvana”) But also in Hinduism, and some other ancient religions. This is supported by our Dalai Lama’s comment, “Real Lama is capable to leave his body during the deep meditation. The meditation may last for years and years. The example is the northern Buryatian Lama who is still staying in the deep meditation for many years.” This event is reported to have caused sensation around the world and there hasn’t been a scientific explaination found to explain this phenomenon yet it seems! Many grateful thanks to our Rinpoche for such valuable, important, useful and amazing revelation.

  21. Mic on Jun 14, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Amazing! Well, this is even more advance than mummification, no pyramid needed, no embalming process like the ancient Egyptian and the body temperature is still remained.
But will he come back alive if he was in deep meditation?????

  22. ngeowchin on Jun 15, 2011 at 11:59 am

Many years ago, I read a quote from a prominent personality ( a scientist or philosopher, i can’t remember )who said that if he was to choose a religion it would have to be Buddhism because it works.
The phenomenon of Lama Itygelov is another testimonial of the efficacy of Buddha’s teachings and instructions when practiced at the highest level.
Such spiritual accomplishment ,scientifically verified will inspire and increase faith in all Buddhist followers in this 21st century. I hope to visit the temple where he is enshrined to pay homage.

Buddhas & Bodhisattvas use all means to teach and benefit us.

Lama Itygelov used his “death” to teach and instill faith in us. He is truly the embodiment of the Three Jewels !

  26. patsy on Jun 17, 2011 at 12:39 am

Wow this is amazing!!! Even scientists cant find a reason to this amazing phenomena. The power of the mind is just amazing. It shows that high tantric practitioners like Lama Itygelov with deep mediatation can achieved this attainments, showing us this miraculous powers for the benefit of all beings. It will bring people to have faith in the Buddhadharma.

Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing this with us.

  27. Carmen Koo on Jun 18, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Another amazing story where the philosophies of Buddhism has once again left the explanation of science speechless. Before this, being a science student, I used to only believe in theories and explanations of science, because for me, I believe only when proven. But stories like these, and alot of other phenomena that exists within Buddhism has left me with another question… Can Science really explain everything?

This article is very interesting, I just couldn’t believe it when I was reading it. I was simply stunned. Buddhist Lamas are very compassionate…for the sake of our believes and need of evidence, to convince sceptics, Buddhist Lamas go to every extent to make us question our own minds and make us contemplate deeper, have greater believe and fatih in the philosophies, practices and power of the Buddhadharma, when one’s practices are pure and correct, shunned from the 8 wordly concerns.

Thank you for sharing this story, dear Rinpoche.

Scientists cannot explain this nor reenact this in a controlled environment. I wonder why scientists do not do their best to unravel this ‘mystery’?

To me, it shows that deep meditation by highly evolved beings do make the mind control the body. In this case, maybe the mind is still hovering around and may move on to a controlled rebirth and continue benefiting when the time is right.

Thank you for posting this blog on Lama Itygelov. To me,this high lama, a Bodhisattva, has remained in his imperishable body to convince skeptics the teachings of Buddha. It is out of compassion, the lama has used his skill to remain in that state to bring people to the Buddhadharma in this degenerate age. The Lama is an embodiment of bodhicitta. He has chosen to remain in the death meditation for so long because to most people, seeing is believing.

  32. Lim Tin Nee on Jul 6, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Thanks Rinpoche for posting this blog on Lama Itygelov. To me ,the Lama ,a Bodhisattva, has remained in his imperishable body to convince the world ,especially the skeptics, the teachings of Buddha. Out of compassion, the Lama has used his skill ,The highest tantric practice ,to remain in that state to bring people to the Buddhadharma in this degenerate age . the Lama is an embodiment of bodhicitta. To most people ,seeing is believing.
Lama Itygelov has the omniscience of a Buddha He predicted what was going to happen to him n his followers ,the destruction of the Buryat area n the subsequent revival of Buddhism.
I hope the many baffled scientists mystified by this phenomenon n studying the case now, willbe the cause for the spread of Buddha’s teaching.

  33. Wan Wai Meng on Dec 7, 2011 at 2:03 am

There are still miracles like this in our degenerate age. So lets not let go of our chance to get some essence from our precious human life. I never think buddhism defy science, it just that science has not caught up in its methods to measure the results of Buddhist practise.

Difference: Rinpoche’s life in Los Angeles is HIGHLY INSPIRATIONAL. More people should know about it. Kechara should do more to promote and educate everyone on who Tsem Rinpoche was before he took ordination. It is a teaching that will apply to so many materialistic people like myself. Kechara should really do alot more to promote the biography and background of Tsem Rinpoche since you have Rinpoche with you and you can gather any information you require and you have the writers/resources. If Kechara does not promote who will? All Kechara staff and students should know Tsem Rinpoche’s background perfectly and speak about it with others. I am so touched and inspired by Rinpoche’s growing up years and I know thousands upon thousands more would be also. Kechara should do more to promote. Not many people know about Rinpoche’s background. My thoughts to everyone. Don’t you all think so?

It is a WONDERFUL IDEA to start your day by reading one story from the 84 Mahasiddhas. They are very inspirational as they started out just like us, but changed and took responsibility and became attained thru sheer effort realizing the futility of life’s endeavours… I use to read their stories in Gaden and it would bring torrents of tears to my eyes. They touched me deeply especially their guru devotion. I wanted to be like that.. Wonderful habit to cultivate every morning upon waking is some dharma reading, then do Tsongkapa guru yoga, migtseyma and then start your day..You will be ready for anything…TR Mahasiddhas-Must bookmark this page: http://blog.tsemtulku.com/?p=23941

Willow Creek is the exact type of town I would love to live in…trees, mountains, rivers.l would set up a house there, big altar, butterlamp house and make lots of offerings and do retreats there and lots of dharma readings. Having bigfoot nearby is just an extra treat. But I wouldn’t move therer for bigfoot-I like the environment..In Tibet Domo Geshe Rinpoche use to meditate in secluded caves and when he gained attainments, Yetis which is Himalayan bigfoots visited him giving him special milk where he made healing pills that were so powerful even the 13th Dalai Lama and Panchen Lamas wanted those pills. Domo Geshe was famous to have association with yetis and they never harmed him, but would drop milk off at his cave and go…I would love to live at Willow Creek so much. I love places like this. If I didn’t have Kechara, I would move there immediately and live there. But I will visit for sure. Will take a group with me. I want to go very much!! Willow Creek is a town in Northern California. This town has the most reported cases of bigfoot sightings. From Willow Creek you go to Bluff Creek where the most famous Patterson-Gimlin film of a genuine bigfoot was walking back in the 60′s was filmed…it is the most famous footage that no one can debunk till today….Willow Creek is so green, full of mountains and beautiful rivers. I will definitely take a group with me and visit one day..I love forests and Northern California..so beautiful.. I don’t want to look for bigfoot, but the whole town is a total mecca for bigfoot enthusiasts with shops and small museums. I would like to go to just enjoy the scenery, the mountains and forests. And see the bigfoot scene.. I would love to live there for sure. Who wants to go with me?? Imagine I have my dharma books and beautiful Buddha shrine and can live here away from the delusions, false dreams, fake promises and false hopes of this world that I never believed from day one anyways??? Dear friends, This is a well made Paranormal real life story. Nothing scary in this episode, but very powerful show of love and willpower. I want you to please watch this carefully and see how a mother reaches out to save her child. Her will was so strong she left her body. The child saw a light leaving the mother and going to the road although she died and 'found' people to save her child. Very touching and beautiful story. This is what I believe happened, what do you think? http://blog.tsemtulku.com/?p=31937

I knew of a lady who when she went to bed at night, she would feel unseen hands touch her body and disturb her sleep. This happened many times. She sought help from many places without relief. When she saw me, I gave her Singdongma. She invited a statue home, set up a shrine for Her and did Singdongma's mantra/prayer daily. The unseen hands stopped disturbing her & this was ten years ago. She does her prayer daily to Singongma till now: http://blog.tsemtulku.com/?p=31904

Dear all, every week I am informed of a death and to offer prayers. This week I was informed of four deaths. With death, everything is almost final and if we didn't do dharma genuinely, we would have regrets. Death is such a omnipresent and frightening stalker. Realize it will come for you one day soon and go all the way with dharma, dharma practice, dharma work and gain realizations. At death, the dharma you have is the only hope. Anything else acquired in life is a total waste of time. Please realize and wake up. Don't procrastinate and keep yourself 'busy' with activities that are empty at the time of death. Our minds will continue at death and what supports that journey is our good merits and attainments collected during our lives. Tsem Rinpoche

Dear Rinpoche, Bryan and I do so much less than what Rinpoche does. When people are asleep Rinpoche's working, when people are awake Rinpoche's working. Not many people in Kechara realize that Rinpoche works the hardest in the entire organization. I didn't know before joining Ladrang. Although Rinpoche may want to go around to pray for people in need, one day I want to able to do this instead of Rinpoche. It is quite taxing and Rinpoche can't be going out of Haven 24 hours to pray for the dying/dead. I'm happy Pastor Yek Yee and Pastor Susan wanted to come today, they really are awesome Pastors. Thank you, Jean Mei

Dear TR,  We have just collected Tashi's ashes. Our Nirvana agent who named May is a very nice lady, she is in her 40+, she is a Buddhist and a Mandarin speaker. She follow us thru out the whole session. May also bought us drinks and settle everything for us.  I have share with her about KH, TR and some other departments we have in Kechara. She is interested in KH. I will arrange with her to come and visit KH and various departments soon. The couple is sending us back home and we will go and get a stupa for Tashi's ashes. Have asked them to go back and rest after this. From Bryan

Dear all,  It's 9:30 AM. I just walked into the house after being in the hospital and then going to finish a funeral for a baby of a student. I have just conducted two funerals in the last 24 hours. The second funeral was for a baby. I had Jean Mei, Bryan, Seng Piow, Pastor Susan, Pastor Yekyee, Lew with me. Pastor Susan and Yekyee really wanted to come and learn. I am glad they made the effort.  We conducted a simple funeral by reciting holy verses, sprinkling holy water onto the baby, protector rice and scattered blessed fresh rose petals all over the baby. Afterwards I had a nice conversation about the baby's mind taking rebirth. Upon leaving the father and father's mother gave me a very warm hug of thanks and support during this most saddest of times for them...and the wife was happy and looked visibly relieved. She let go alot and let go of her guilt after we talked.. I have sent Bryan and Jean Mei with the family to cremate the baby this morning at 11AM It will take two hours and then we can bring the ashes home. Part of the ashes will be in a large stupa. All of us are extremely exhausted but did very good work. That is what Kechara is about. I am very happy we can help the baby and family along their way. When they called, they sounded extremely desperate as it was very late with no one to help them. We were very honoured to help them. I didn't call Pastor Yekyee and Pastor Susan heard, they immediately wanted to join me. Now with no sleep after baby Tashi's funeral, they went to Kechara to give dharma classes. I am proud of them and my assistants who wanted to help all last night until this morning. It is wonderful to give it all we can for others. That is what Kechara is about. Tsem Rinpoche

Dear TR,

I have received some update from Gaden regarding Justin Ripley's ashes.

Monastery have done a whole day of Vajrayogini Daju and Ruchok this Sunday, this is for Rinpoche's previous life and current life students who passed away recently: Geshe Ngawang and Justin Ripley.

Monastery is now in the middle making Tsa Tsa out from Geshe Ngawang's ashes. After they finish, monastery start to make Tsa Tsa out from Justin's ashes.

Monastery will use Justin's ashes and make a few different type of Tsa Tsa:

1) Chenrezig, Manjushri and Vajrapani Tsa Tsa

2) White Tara, Amitayus and Nagyalma Tsa Tsa

3) small stupa Tsa Tsa

I have asked monastery to mail us few Tsa Tsa after finish, this will be place inside KFR big VY stupa.

Thanks
Bryan (Justin Ripley's ashes has been made into holy Buddha tsatsas {as in picture} to gain more merits for him). We love Justin.

When we trust, practice and go all the way with the tantric path of Vajra Yogini, we have nothing to worry about. All the worries both worldly and spiritual will be solved. We should surrender to Vajra Yogini's blessing by being our best. We just set up this wonderful statue of Buddha Vajra Yogini in our library area. How beautiful She is. Buddha Vajra Yogini is special deity for those overwhelmed by laziness, miserliness and want easy practice but big results. May all of you be blessed to see Her holy image. Kechara Discovery Dept of our orgazination does such wonderful images available for the public. I am very happy as She is beautiful. Thank You Kechara Discovery! Tsem Rinpoche

When I first arrived in Malaysia in 1992 I had a group of people who would sponsor my tickets, stay and for many years sponsor much needed help in Gaden. One of them was Ms Mooi Lan who lives in Cheras. She has been a great supporter for the last 20 years and in the past sponsor. I recieved very sad news she passed away this morning at 4Am. I request all my students to please light a candle for her to take good rebirth and come across the dharma again. Offer the candle to Buddha Dukkar..that is the Buddha I assigned to her many years ago and she diligently practiced and set up a shrine to Dukkar.. I will miss her and never forget her kindness. Many of the things I wanted to do in the past she generously helped. Tsem Rinpoche ( see here http://blog.tsemtulku.com/?p=4354 )

Heruka! We say we want to improve yet we don't hold our vows. We promise to keep our samaya, yet our promise to our earlier promises laxed. We want to experience only good results yet we hold onto our face. We want wealth, yet we give nothing. We want success, yet we offer tiny offerings to the Three Jewels. We say we have great faith in our Guru, yet when his assignments are difficult we run. We say we want a good rebirth yet all our actions are motivated by self gain. Heruka, Heruka, Heruka, how are we to recieve your blessings when our three doors are closed tightly by selfishness, ignorance and anger?~Tsem Rinpoche

I haven't lived in Gaden since 1992 when I was sent to Malaysia. I love Gaden and loved so much living there. I like so many things about Gaden. Conversations would not be lonely and easy. Whatever I talk about the monks immediately understand. I do not have to face 'opposition' , doubts, hundreds of questions, and every detail simple about the dharma or dharma work has to be explained. I miss that so much. I am not lonely for company, but I am lonely for familiarity very much. I was very content, at peace and in my element in Gaden. I never knew or imagined I would have to go to Malaysia, stay and take on heavy responsibilities. I am not complaining but I love Gaden, the monks, my teachers, the great masters, the senior monks whom I have many friends. I miss them so much. So so much. I love and respect the great old monks, Rinpoches and spectacular Geshes. Gaden was a city of practitioners and I was home. Lord Tsongkapa's presence pervades the whole Gaden. TR

Dear all, I gave a talk on desire to a few inclusive of Paris and David. I asked David and Paris to write up the talk on their blogs. My plan was after they write it, I'll link it to my blog. From my blog people will click to their blog to read the write up and benefit many who read the talk. Paris did a very good write up and did not miss the subtle points I was expressing that night. She really took the time and effort to write it...I was happy to see she wrote exaclty as I expressed. Effort pays off usually or eventually. I am happy to see there are 669 views (43 comments) already going back to Paris' blog to read the teachings. The teachings will be benfit many. Must save and read again and again. Must share with others...Must contemplate. You want dharma, I am giving it to you and Paris wrote it out perfectly. Bryan gave me an incredible MOTHER'S DAY GIFT. It is so auspicious. He had someone draw HH Kyabje Zong Rinpoche's sacred face onto the body of Buddha Vajradharma. Buddha Vajradharma is the form Buddha takes to teach the immaculate and fautless tantra of Vajra Yogini. In Vajra Yogini's tantra and meditations, you must visualize your guru in the form of Vajradharma to make offerings both inner, outer & secret offerings daily to one's tantric guru & to meditate on Him in that form. It is very integral part of the practice. If you do the meditations well on your guru in this particular form during the practice of the sadhana..you can gain tremendous realizations and control over one's mind to leave the body when you want. So getting this picture today was an omen if Kecharians fulfill their responsibilities, then Vajra Yogini's practice will spread in this region. Very good omen. I feel this strongly. Bryan really planned out this gift & surprised me!! I will put in Chamang Ladrang in the future. THANK YOU BRYAN!!TR

Back in New Jersey over 30 years ago, there lived a lady down the street who was also a student of my teacher. Her name is Carmen (she is a nun now and her ordination name is: Ani Thupten). She had a nice size library of books and many dharma books. I loved the Dharma books!! I would spend so much time browsing and getting snippets of each book from Carmen. I use to ride by bike down to chat with her and borrow her books and it took me like 5 mins by bike..She lived on the same street. I would read dharma books voraciously and write down my questions. I would call Carmen almost daily for years to ask her to clarify the readings I had questions on. She would spend hours on a phone with me answering questions never once losing patience. I learned so much from her. She had vast dharma knowledge, very devoted to our teacher and would do her meditations and extensive sadhanas daily. She would join in all the dharma classes and pujas at our nearby Kalmuck Buddhist Temple. She was such a good dharma friend and I enjoyed her company very much. I wanted to be like her to have the freedom to study and practice dharma. When I recievd my first initiation by our teacher at the temple, Carmen sat right next to me on the front row. Thrilling!! After initiation we would have ten days of explanations (commentary) from our teacher His Eminence Kensur Losang Tharchin Rinpoche. I was so excited and deeply happy to get commentary from our great and knowledgable teacher. What I did not understand, I would of course consult Carmen who is much more advanced and taught me patiently after each day’s teachings. Around 15 years ago Carmen came to India and I travelled with her to holy Bodhgaya, Varanasi and Dharamsala. I escorted her to these places. Since then I have not met up with her. But I know she is fine. Around two years back I sent her a three foot Vajra Yogini statue as a gift from me. Carmen received the statue and was very happy. It was my offering to her for so much kindness shown me when I was a child. I wish so much she can visit Malaysia. She would be happy. We all want to be a part of something big and with good results. But the only way we can be a part of that is if we work hard together with the other members of our Kechara. The time will pass. It can pass with you taking on difficulties or it can pass with you doing nothing. I feel it's better to work hard now and enjoy later than to enjoy nothing now and then end up nowhere later. Prayers and dedications are ok, but hard work must be part of the prayer. Tsem Rinpoche

His Holiness the Dalai Lama seated here with His sacred mother. A mother who gives birth to great beings like Shakyamuni, Tsongkapa, Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, Trijang Rinpoche, etc must be a Buddha Herself, a highly realized Dakini, a powerful practitioner, or a lady who made prayers in previous lives to provide others with great dharma in one way or another. A lady of great spiritual merit or virtue.. I wanted to share this photo with you because if I ever met His Holiness' mother, I would prostrate to Her immediately. Beautiful picture. His Holiness is not ordinary for sure and neither could a being who gave birth to Him. Tibetans always said she was very saintly, gentle, simple and deeply spiritual. During Her lifetime many went to recieve Her blessings..Tsem Rinpoche

It's very revealing how when you give, offer and have something for them, they crowd around smiling, happy and easy. The minute you ask them to give something, contribute or really help out, they totally disappear. Handphones shut. No replies. No sound. As if you they never knew you. People like that make themselves 2nd rate, find 1st rate people to work with and move on. Recently I encountered some students like that!~ Tsem Rinpoche

The people that helping at animal liberation are Frederick Law, Jack, Lilyn, Sam and Chervenne, Jill & Victor Choi. 3. We have around 70 people attended. It was a drizzling morning. But the people are every enthusiastic. 4. Pastor Chia was here to brief and lead the prayer. We introduce to the people our Kechara Pastor. Sound new to them but they can see that the Pastor is someone in a highly position to deliver spiritual talk or ritual. 5. There are some new faces that join us today. Knowing our event frm KP, KO, Facebook and friends. There are also people from the park for excercise. From Nicholas

Wesak Day May 5, 2012 at Kechara House. I gave refuge to 100 new persons last night. TR

Last night between 300-400 persons congregated at Kechara while I gave a talk to them on 'making a choice' and 'the power and purpose of stupas'. The talk has been taped and will be blogged once tape is ready. The talk was two hours and it flowed well for me although I had very little sleep. Towards the end of the talk I gave refuge vows to 100 new persons from different countries for this. When everything was done, I met up with a group of 15 and 5 from Shanghai. Had a nice dharma talk with them on how to make a centre grow and harmony. Passed out nice dharma gifts to all the visitors so they don't go home empty handed. Also seperately met some directors and movie producers that attended the talk and sought private time with me..these producers and directors are very well known locally. One is from Hong Hong. Got home around 5Am and saw so many gifts from people. Did a Manjushri dedication for all the people who offered gifts to me on Wesak day in gratitude. Also some people from Europe called in to Kechara to arrange flowers to be given to me last night. That was very sweet. I have so many flowers now..over 70 bouquets I would...guess. They have all been offered up on the shrine. Thank you. TR (May 5, 2012)

Karma exists and created constantly by our actions. Karma created in the past is fertile and will open up when the situation arises. We should never relax and think everything will be alright when there is so much volatile latent karma like a huge volcano temporarily dormant. We can do something about it though. We can 'manipulate' karma and here's how: http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/kechara-13-depts/what-are-pujas-about-do-take-a-good-read.html

If we always do not understand Dharma, then that is a sign of not studying. If we always blame Dharma, it is a sign we do not know what dharma really is. If we always expect of the Dharma, then we are using Dharma in ineffective methods. If we find Dharma difficult, then it is because we are unwilling to accept it. If we give up the Dharma, we are get deeper into our sufferings without respite. If we complain about Dharma it is a sign we are looking for blame in the wrong places and not within ourselves.~Tsem Rinpoche

Many times when we are about to embark on something really beneficial or just finished something very good, we will often times witness a rainbow and there is no rain or clouds.Today again at KECHARA FOREST RETREAT after they finished their work in the evening another clear rainbow appeared in the clear sky reported to me by Datuk May and ten other Kecharians volunteering there today. I rather die w natural smile than a fake one made up by the embalmers.
Thank you for reminding we hv choice.
