Plas Mawr Hauntings
“People can harm you more when they are alive.”
This is so powerful and true. You can get scared and even risk a heart attack upon meeting a ghost, but living people can really cause pain and tears, troubles and heartbreaks. However, to be reborn as a wandering spirit is not nice. They have to wander for a very long time before that karma is exhausted, without any chance to create merits to support a new positive rebirth.
Read the story below then contemplate. Do you feel sorry for the tragedy that the man faced? If so, then do you feel empathy for the wandering ghosts? Let me know.

Famous ghost haunted mansion in North Wales
In the UK alone, there are over 450 haunted hotels, castles and haunted inns! Ghost tours and ghost hunts have grown in popularity. So it comes as no surprise that there are even weekend haunts and haunt breaks organized for tourists…
One of the top spots is Plas Mawr (which translates into English as ‘Great Mansion’) house in Conwy, in North Wales. Plas Mawr is located at the heart of medieval Conwy’s narrow streets and is reputedly haunted by a host of spirits! This house is thought to be the best-preserved Elizabethan town house in the United Kingdom.
The mansion holds some deep secrets and was the scene of a series of tragedies which centered on the Watch Tower and the Lantern Room. The mansion was the residence of a wealthy merchant named Robert Wynn. He came from one of Wales’ wealthiest families, but as the third son, had to make his own way in the world. By the age of fifty, he had enough of a personal fortune to build himself a mansion.
One day, his pregnant wife was on the top floor of the house with her three year-old daughter. She was looking out of the Watch Tower window, hoping to catch the first glimpse of him coming back home. As it was getting late and there was no sign of him, mother and child began to walk down the spiral staircase. The pregnant mother, holding her daughter in her arms, suddenly slipped and fell down the stairs. The noise of their fall brought the housekeeper running. She found both mother and child were badly injured and took them to the nearest room, which was the Lantern Room. A servant was sent to bring the doctor.
The family doctor was not at home but his assistant, a Doctor Richard, came back to the house with the servant and tended the patients as best he could. Realising that the condition of both mother and child was getting worse, and there was a great danger that the mother was likely to give premature birth to her expected baby, he decided that he should call in his senior doctor. However, the housekeeper would not allow him to leave the two injured patients unattended and locked him in with them in the Lantern Room. A servant was then sent to fetch the old doctor as quickly as possible.
After a lengthy delay the housekeeper became very worried and decided to check that her mistress, daughter and doctor were well, but just as she was about to unlock the door, the master finally came home. She very quickly told him what had happened. As soon as he heard what had happened, the man burst into the Lantern Room only to find his wife, daughter and new-born child, all dead, with no sign of the doctor. Overcome with grief he pushed the housekeeper out of the room saying that he would not leave the room until the Doctor had been found to explain the whole affair. Hour after hour he was heard to pace the room, occasionally being heard to cry. He worked himself up to such a state that he was found dead the following morning by his wife’s side, having killed himself with his own sword.
The young doctor was never seen again. His only possible means of escape would have been up the chimney, where he almost certainly lost his way and was finally overcome by smoke and fumes from the connecting chimneys. It is from this maze of chimney passages that muffled cries have been heard, noises thought to be the echoes of the ghost of Doctor. The house is said to be haunted also by its master, constantly searching for the young doctor to seek revenge. The young doctor himself is also said to haunt, and occasionally the ghost of Lady Wynn is seen. Strange noises are often reported emanating from the Lantern Room which then seem to travel around the whole of the house.
Now back to present time…
Margaret Williams who has lived next door to Plas Mawr for the last 30 years has more ghost stories. In the back yard of her home, she pointed to what was once a stone arch linking the two properties: “A little girl comes through the wall, she is dressed in blue crinoline. She’s got auburn hair down her back. “There’s also a man who comes through, dressed in what looks like a civil war outfit. They walk through the yard here and up the stone steps and disappear. I’ve seen it many times. “There is also a lady in a grey crinoline, but she just stands still in the yard.”

Dear Rinpoche
I feel sorry for the whole situation and the beings involved. I think some of us are afraid of ghost because we do not know how to deal with them. Not because we do not have compassion for them. We do not know how to measure their strength, what will they do to us, and what can we do in response.
Warm regards
Valentina
Thanks For the sharing Rinpoche
Thank you, Rinpochela. I think it is truly a good idea, that you share with us stories of the paranormal like the one above – great lessons could be derived. It becomes clear that, one should never be overwhelmed by attachment, hatred and delusion and other afflictive states of mind. Like you said, having degenerated to the lower rebirth, wallowing in the unwholesome, destructi ve states of mind, it’s so difficult to get out!
It is chilling to think what kind of karma would this woman must have had to slip killing herself her young child and unborn child all at once and the the father coming back to a dead family. Yes all spirits manifest due to negative karma, no spirit manifesting is due to something good.
